So if Rios is a Hologram why would he be worried about a weapon in his face...

Another reason I would have liked it to be Orion is that it would be another cool connection to the Cold Equations novel. In there, Soong ran a casino there to make money. Later on Data runs it when he is revived.

After this episode, we'll be halfway through the first season and we're already well into some good Trek, full of space travel and planetary adventure. What's going on so far?
  • The failed rescue mission continues to weigh on Picard. He let his push for an ideal outcome get in the way of getting the job done and as a result, nothing got done. This is a problem for a lot of people and in Picard's situation, it proved costly. Will he make the same mistake in whatever he's pursuing now?
  • What exactly is Picard pursuing? We have Romulans digging around in a Borg cube, a Starfleet conspiracy and organic synths, one of whom is "the destoyer". A lot of pieces to a puzzle, but no clear picture just yet and certainly no obvious real-world analogs.
  • It's been suggested that he'll be full on rogue and pursued by Starfleet. Could happen. He's already got angry Romulans on his heels. Having the Enterprise itself after him at some point would be an interesting twist.
  • In the meantime, Picard can feel right at home on the ship. Literally. He's now got his vineyard study as a ready room. Pretty cool if you ask me. Never knew Rios had his own holodeck. Or was it just some emitters? Either way, it works as an artificial environment. Makes you wonder if every room in every ship can be outfitted that way somewhere down the line.
  • I'm down with Rios. The character wasn't promoted properly. A badass cigar-smoking thief with a heart of gold or somesuch? No thanks. We don't have much on him yet but at least they haven't hit us over the head with any strong clichés at least. Love the different holograms too. Every actor's dream.
  • Seven of Nine returns. Too bad she collapsed and died upon beaming to Picard's ship. We'll miss her but it was a nice cameo and a fitting end to the character. Oh, wait…
