Spoilers Star Trek: Picard 1x05 - "Stardust City Rag"

Here's what meta...

The first Space Shuttle (not space worthy, but used for testing within our atmosphere) was named Enterprise, and was named that specifically in honor of the TV show's hero ship.

Then in various Star Treks (TMP, TNG, ENT) there were models or artwork of all ships to carry the name Enterprise, and one of those ship models/artwork was of the Space Shuttle.

So in-universe, the history of ships named Enterprise includes one named after the fictional TV show ship.

 

Kinda already knew that.

No idea what the one to the left of Seven depicts.


The one to the right of Rios' head looks like a Baroque tapestry showing people in a garden.

 

Obviously the Trekverse version of Galaxy Quest is a homage to the Orville.

 

I'd say the line gets drawn when a belief or custom impacts the rights of another or requires a life to be taken or the crew members life to be endangered. To use Klingons as an example Picard, Sisko and Janeway seemed pretty tolerant of most klingon customs. However, both Picard and Sisko drew the line at Worf taking a life and Janeway drew the line with B'elanna wanting to risk her own life to visit her mother in sto'vo'kor.

I imagine that most Captain's would treat individual beliefs with an open mind, but whether they allow a crew member to practice those beliefs would depend on whether it breaks Federation law, how it would impact the crew and whether another life would be affected. At the end of the day Starfleet officers from different cultures know that they will have to make sacrifices regarding their cultures for the greater good. If they cannot understand that then they have no right to wear the uniform.

Oh.That was Icheb in the teaser. I was wondering what that was all about, and how it would tie in with the story.

Good. It would have been better without the (as TVTropes calls it) "eye-scream" in the teaser. That cost it a mandatory 2-point deduction for gratuitous gross-out.

I recently rewatched This episode and what happened to poor Icheb was really shocking and controversial and how it ties into the story of Seven of Nine's story arc in season one.

Also Dr Juratti killing Bruce Maddox was totally unexpected and seeing how it has consequences for Doctor Juratti's story arc too.I wonder how it maybe dealt with in season 2

That TVTropes has a name, and a page, for "eye scream" says something in and of itself.

Speaking of which, I note that TVTropes lists two additional appearances of the trope, in "Et in Arcadia Ego" parts 1 and 2. Duly noted.

 

Recently re-watched, and while it holds up, I do fast-forward through the eyeball horror now.
