I understand that Windows and MacOS are very different operating systems, but I've never quite understood why it seems so difficult to port programs from one to the other. Don't computers operate the same when you get down to the basics of it?

The biggest barrier is the difference in machine code, but that's only if you're using different processor architecture (Power PC versus Intel, for example); once you get beyond that it's down to the language used to write the program and if a compiler is available for the operating system you want to port the code to. If STO is written in .NET then you'd likely have to re-write it in Java or something like that since I'm pretty sure Microsoft doesn't make a .NET programming environment for OS X. If they're using some kind of C variant then I shouldn't think translating it to OS X's Objective C would be a huge undertaking.

It's all down to whether or not they want to pay someone to recompile and debug the code for the new platform. Regardless of the effort involved it will take time and money to do that. The new Mac App store seems like a pretty good place to sell your wares though, so I hope they'll give it a go.

That's the joy of being non-conformist, I guess. You get to be special and elite, but when it comes to mass-producing things, you're elite enough that it's usually not worth it on the cost/benefit scale to remake things for a minority of possible customers...

I think there's enough Mac owners that it's worthwhile, otherwise no one would bother developing for it. Now that Apple is using Intel processors it shouldn't be _that_ difficult to port the code, but if they aren't bothered I've got a lot of other things to do...
This doesn't seem to be the case. It's rather rare for companies to port games to the Mac. If it really was a profitable undertaking you would expect it to be a lot more common.

Well, I can get most of the big FPSes and the App store is bursting at the seams with games which I reckon aren't all exclusive to the Mac. More than a couple of companies are clearly releasing games for the platform. Certainly more than enough that I'm happy. I would like to see Aspyr or someone else license and port my favourite Trek games though.

The primary difference re: PC vs Mac in most games today is the graphics. World of Warcraft was made cross-platform easily because it utilizes OpenGL. Games like Guild Wars and Star Trek Online, which use DirectX instead of OpenGL, will not run on a Mac without translating all the calls from DirectX to something your Mac will understand. That is essentially all that Wine does when players "port" games from PC to Mac: converts the DirectX calls to something your OpenGL system can understand. You sacrifice performance by doing this, but it works.

IMO more developers should use OpenGL so I don't need to sacrifice performance to play games. :)

Unfortunately, the graphics drivers are optimized for DirectX instead of OpenGL, and thus they'd be sacrificing performance on the platform most of their customers use, to improve performance for a tiny minority.

My last Fed toon reached Vice Admiral level (still wearing captain pips though).
That just leaves my Borg Klingon for leveling. Won't make any new toons soon I guess, since I reached my extended toon cap as well. Need one spot open for the foundry anyway.

Actually, considering what they're doing to the Tutorial for BOTH factions with Season 4; - you might want to consider rolling some new toons in very late June (The project Live date - it'll be on tribble in late May.);)

Someone that's used it: is the Galaxy-X class worth the money? Been looking at it, just can't quite justify paying $20 for a ship, I guess.

Also, anyone up for a Terradome run this weekend? Early Sunday afternoon (EDT) maybe? I'm but a lowly Chief in the fleet, so can only suggest things, not set them up...

You know you can but more, unless theres some limit I was unaware of.

Good to know.

now if only I could get a T5 TOS connie or at least one that levels up with me [runs from canonistas and insecure PVPers] Oh, and a type 3 phaser rifle in the TOS bundle I could die happy.

They actually improved it recently (added another weapon slot so it is more in line with the T5 retrofits.) That said, if possible, I'd try to get it via the referal programs (ie getting 5 friends to sub for a month, as you'll ALSO get 2000 CP on top of the free Gal-X.)

Overall though, while nice, it's definitely NOT an auto 'I Win' ship in PvP. Tractor Beam and Phaser-lance with a Dual Cannon or two can really hurt an opponent though ;)

Me? I always liked the look of the ship, and I have a really good (and stable job with a lot of seniority behind me); so I just bought the thing (although I did wait for the first 20% off sale it was available.)

Higher-tier Connie is coming, dunno if it'll be Tier 5 though, not much detail about it yet.

You can get a Phaser 3 for free; go to your mission computer, find the Deferi missions, and do "Night of the Comet" again. They've updated the reward, the Phaser 3 they offer is now Mark XI.

Ship stats are all very similar at each tier. The c store ships are essentially cosmetic luxuries. So the question is do you like the appearance enough to spend 20 bucks? For me the answer is yes.

How do you know when it's time to level up? I clicked on it because it was flashing, but whenever I tried to assign new skills (?) the accept button didn't work. Not sure what I'm doing on this yet.

I'm still on the first part of the game, where you have to fight the Borg probes in your ship.

You click on the flashing "skill up" or you hit "K" to bring up your character sheet, click on yourself, and click on "skills".

Then, you use the green arrows to raise skills you want to increase, or to lower one you've started to raise but not clicked Accept on yet, until you've spent all the points you can (which may not be all of them, depending on what skills you have available). When you're happy with your point allocation, you click on Accept.

He is still in the tutorial. Can you skill up in there?
