I understand that Windows and MacOS are very different operating systems, but I've never quite understood why it seems so difficult to port programs from one to the other. Don't computers operate the same when you get down to the basics of it?
This doesn't seem to be the case. It's rather rare for companies to port games to the Mac. If it really was a profitable undertaking you would expect it to be a lot more common. That's the joy of being non-conformist, I guess. You get to be special and elite, but when it comes to mass-producing things, you're elite enough that it's usually not worth it on the cost/benefit scale to remake things for a minority of possible customers...
I think there's enough Mac owners that it's worthwhile, otherwise no one would bother developing for it. Now that Apple is using Intel processors it shouldn't be _that_ difficult to port the code, but if they aren't bothered I've got a lot of other things to do...

The primary difference re: PC vs Mac in most games today is the graphics. World of Warcraft was made cross-platform easily because it utilizes OpenGL. Games like Guild Wars and Star Trek Online, which use DirectX instead of OpenGL, will not run on a Mac without translating all the calls from DirectX to something your Mac will understand. That is essentially all that Wine does when players "port" games from PC to Mac: converts the DirectX calls to something your OpenGL system can understand. You sacrifice performance by doing this, but it works.
IMO more developers should use OpenGL so I don't need to sacrifice performance to play games.![]()
My last Fed toon reached Vice Admiral level (still wearing captain pips though).
That just leaves my Borg Klingon for leveling. Won't make any new toons soon I guess, since I reached my extended toon cap as well. Need one spot open for the foundry anyway.

Actually, considering what they're doing to the Tutorial for BOTH factions with Season 4; - you might want to consider rolling some new toons in very late June (The project Live date - it'll be on tribble in late May.)![]()
Someone that's used it: is the Galaxy-X class worth the money? Been looking at it, just can't quite justify paying $20 for a ship, I guess.
Also, anyone up for a Terradome run this weekend? Early Sunday afternoon (EDT) maybe? I'm but a lowly Chief in the fleet, so can only suggest things, not set them up...
now if only I could get a T5 TOS connie or at least one that levels up with me [runs from canonistas and insecure PVPers] Oh, and a type 3 phaser rifle in the TOS bundle I could die happy.

How do you know when it's time to level up? I clicked on it because it was flashing, but whenever I tried to assign new skills (?) the accept button didn't work. Not sure what I'm doing on this yet.
I'm still on the first part of the game, where you have to fight the Borg probes in your ship.
He is still in the tutorial. Can you skill up in there? How do you know when it's time to level up? I clicked on it because it was flashing, but whenever I tried to assign new skills (?) the accept button didn't work. Not sure what I'm doing on this yet.

You click on the flashing "skill up" or you hit "K" to bring up your character sheet, click on yourself, and click on "skills".
Then, you use the green arrows to raise skills you want to increase, or to lower one you've started to raise but not clicked Accept on yet, until you've spent all the points you can (which may not be all of them, depending on what skills you have available). When you're happy with your point allocation, you click on Accept.
