Star Trek: Online

I'll buy the pre-order for $5 and play the 2 weeks of open beta just for the ships. But if it's as grindy and small zoned as everything else Cryptic has done, I'm out.

Which reminds me, in other Cryptic games, I would call the zones "sectors," and when it came time to go to another zone, I would make the warp sound f/x.

I will probably play a Benzite. I think people will be pretty pleased with the variety that the character creator allows.

How they should have done it:

You start out as one ensign on a type 6 shuttle, you go around doing missions for the fleet and building up points. Eventually you move up to a type 11 a runabout or one of those federation fighters. At this point you start building up a crew. The crew can either be other players or bots.

Eventually you 'buy' a ship when you have the rank and credits to afford one. Something like an old Miranda class. (You would see lots of these at first).

Some dedicated fans would form large guilds to buy galaxy classes when the regular players still are ferrying dilithium ore to build up points, but that's the way it would work.

Once you get a ship and have built up enough points you could then 'sell' it and buy another or upgrade the existing ship. Imagine battling a klingon fleet with a super-modded constitution class with Quantorps and upgraded phasers!

Eventually the ship would have no more possible mods so you would have to trade it or have it as a secondary ship.

Also, I would like to see no 'instances'. Like I really want to hang around until five other players are in the area till we all get some distress call for a ship I have already rescued ! Play should be as natural as possible, with some deaths. If your shp gets blow up you should wake in sickbay with your heavily damaged ship in dock and the computer should say you were found floating in space, heavily damaged by a salvage team.

Sounds pretty good actually. I could go with that.

new 45 second trailer "Exploration"

Cryptic has released a brand new trailer entitled "Exploration"

video length: 1:07 - (actually starts at :18 )
here:

a look at several different races throughout the trailer. As a little bonus, we get a peek at some battle scenes and weaponry, which seems to consist heavily of various types of phaser fire exchange. No actual hand-to-hand is seen

i like the music.

Re: new 45 second trailer "Exploration"

I found it hilarious that 2/3rds of the way through the "exploration trailer", things erupt into a drunken orgy of ship on ship violence!

Some of you may not be too happy. Cryptic is apparently encouraging Clownsuit Syndrome and Rainbow Starfleet Officer uniforms.

So be warned you'll find a dazzling array of neon and hot pink Starfleet uniforms on people running around with no hint of Departmental Color. And before anyone asks, Im not joking, sadly. I dont know why STO needs the full color pallet from Champions Online. And believe me.. it really gets annoying, though I suppose I cant say much since the NDA is still in effect till Tuesday.

They aren't "encouraging" anything... they're letting people choose what they want to do. If some people choose to make horridly ugly uniforms well then... welcome to the world of MMOs :p

Its still highly disturbing they'd allow that, it makes a mockery of the IP, not to mention my eyes bleed. If It were Civilian clothing I wouldnt care what people designed but the Starfleet Uniform is as Iconic as Stormtrooper armor, I dont think Cryptic should give people the keys to defacing Starfleet. They should try to at least protect the Franchise somewhat.

They have removed all the bright gaudy colors from the uniform customizer. They tried to limit the custom options on the uniforms even more but they had so much yelling and creaming about it they backed down, but they DID remove the bright gaudy colors.

Thank goodness for that at least, Bright guady colors really needed to go.

But theres a good example of the BS we all will have to face. All the idiots from other MMOs coming to STO that dont really care or like Star Trek much trying to turn this into Star Wars Online.

Hopefully any Damage they do to the game we can get fixed when they all move onto SW The old Republic and all thats left in STO are Real Star Trek fans, like all of us here.

That would be terribly unfortunate, as that will pretty much signal STO's death.

There are not enough "Real Star Trek fans" to keep an MMO profitable enough to in operation.

I agree. There has to be a happy medium between the two camps.

And, in terms of uniforms anyway, what we're getting is.

At the end of the day though, it's an MMO. People will abuse customization options. Some of those people will even be Trek fans who do it for a laugh. The only way to "fix" that is to remove all customization... and that just won't fly.

Im pretty sure there are way more Star Trek fans in the world then World of Warcraft has subscribers, but perhaps most Star Trek fans dont play games.

I do think a good amount of non gamers will play STO though.

As for STO Subscribers, I think we can do without those Spree MMO Players that move from MMO to MMO causing trouble. I hate those people, I just hope the Devs dont turn this into Generic Sci Fi game 2328 just because non Trek fans want stupid things.
