I'll buy the pre-order for $5 and play the 2 weeks of open beta just for the ships. But if it's as grindy and small zoned as everything else Cryptic has done, I'm out.
Star Trek Online Hands OnThe open beta begins on January 12th, but by heading over to FilePlanet you can get your hands on a beta key and start playing as early as January 6th.
How they should have done it:
You start out as one ensign on a type 6 shuttle, you go around doing missions for the fleet and building up points. Eventually you move up to a type 11 a runabout or one of those federation fighters. At this point you start building up a crew. The crew can either be other players or bots.
Eventually you 'buy' a ship when you have the rank and credits to afford one. Something like an old Miranda class. (You would see lots of these at first).
Some dedicated fans would form large guilds to buy galaxy classes when the regular players still are ferrying dilithium ore to build up points, but that's the way it would work.
Once you get a ship and have built up enough points you could then 'sell' it and buy another or upgrade the existing ship. Imagine battling a klingon fleet with a super-modded constitution class with Quantorps and upgraded phasers!
Eventually the ship would have no more possible mods so you would have to trade it or have it as a secondary ship.
Also, I would like to see no 'instances'. Like I really want to hang around until five other players are in the area till we all get some distress call for a ship I have already rescued ! Play should be as natural as possible, with some deaths. If your shp gets blow up you should wake in sickbay with your heavily damaged ship in dock and the computer should say you were found floating in space, heavily damaged by a salvage team.
viaa look at several different races throughout the trailer. As a little bonus, we get a peek at some battle scenes and weaponry, which seems to consist heavily of various types of phaser fire exchange. No actual hand-to-hand is seen
http://kotaku.com/5444515/ships-named-for-star-trek-onlineCryptic held a contest to develop names for three ship classifications in its upcoming Star Trek Online MMO, and the winners have been announced.
Here are the ships, identified as Tier 5 vessels:
EMISSARY CLASS (pictured)
DERVISH CLASS
DESTINY CLASS
Its still highly disturbing they'd allow that, it makes a mockery of the IP, not to mention my eyes bleed. If It were Civilian clothing I wouldnt care what people designed but the Starfleet Uniform is as Iconic as Stormtrooper armor, I dont think Cryptic should give people the keys to defacing Starfleet. They should try to at least protect the Franchise somewhat.
Hopefully ... they all move onto SW The old Republic and all thats left in STO are Real Star Trek fans, like all of us here.
I agree. There has to be a happy medium between the two camps.Hopefully ... they all move onto SW The old Republic and all thats left in STO are Real Star Trek fans, like all of us here.
That would be terribly unfortunate, as that will pretty much signal STO's death.
There are not enough "Real Star Trek fans" to keep an MMO profitable enough to in operation.
