I generally prefer a female avatar. Gear looks cooler on them.
It's not about roleplay... it's about looking at nice features while playingGenerally use same gender characters unless taking advantage of a skill set, like the Orion Female Science Officer.

On the serious side, I created a female character on LOTRO just because it fit the character better than being male. It's difficult to play because as soon as the char steps out, she's surrounded by weirdos. If I create a female char, I don't go out of my way to make her sexy, but it still draws too much unnecessary attention. Just my experience.
