I think it would have been cool to have some sort of throwback to the possibility of a Romulan reunification - much like the TNG episode. I can recall early on hearing reports that Sela and Spock were set to be in the movie. There was still something about Picard being cloned, but having Sela and Spock sounded really sweet.
