Star Trek- Mirror Mirror- A new Michigan Production

Hi

I just want to introduce myself, My Name is Steve, a big trekkie, Mirror Universe Fan, and former crew on Phase II.

Like I said im a big Mirror Universe Fan, and I was sad that there was never a sequel to Mirror Mirror. And we never did see what happened in between the time that Hoshi Sato took over the Terran Empire. Lots of area's to explore. Im A film student, and I love making short films. So I figured why not start my own production here in Michigan, especially since this state is very much lacking in film.

I have written the teaser and act I of the sequel to Mirror Mirror.

Long term goals will be the following
Locate an appropriate studio space
Build the TOS Mirror Mirror Sets, Transporter Room, Bridge, Captains Quarters, Sickbay, the usual stuff. If im lucky main engineering.

Once the studio is complete, itll be open for any of you trekkies to use for your productions.

Id love to get more people involved in this, Im good with editing and camera work, and some graphics, But i know there is far more to this.

Let me know if you'd like to get involved :), Once I get a team together, I will have an indiegogo campaign to raise funding to start getting everything we need to get this going. Looking to keep the studio in Mid Michigan, nice and centrally located for everyone.

Although Michigan is far from existing TOS-sets (which could be redressed for your production), if you are only making a short film, why no go green screen with just a few 'forward' items, like a captain's chair?

None of the other three Michigan fan films, the completed Encarta, the ongoing Osiris, or the new and exciting Horizon, are TOS era.

You are weirdly equidistant from the TOS sets of Phase II, Continues, and Starbase Studios. You are slightly closer to the bridge-only set in Minnesota of Star Trek: Eagle. George Kayaian also has a bridge-only set in his parents basement on Long Island (also in NY, but very close to LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports and NYC). But since you have a connection to Phase II, I wonder if that wouldn't be a better way to go than starting by building yet another set of TOS sets.

Perhaps you can first work with Horizon. If that film works, and you are still inclined to build sets, I hope you will consider either ENT-era sets or TNG/VOY/DS9 era sets. No standing sets exist for these era fan films, although somebody is working on restoring a TNG era bridge.

Of course, I'm excited about all new Star Trek Fan Films. I hope you consolidate with others, since so many of those that are started are never completed.

Another reason id like to build the sets is to allow the regular public, good old michigan peeps to come onto the ship. Let people use it for weddings and whatnot along with shooting films. I plan to make the bridge fully interactive, Every switch will actually do something, from turning on spocks computer to flipping on the astrogator. LCDs in place of the old style gels and light boxes.

I do like the green screen idea for the teaser, since the teaser takes place in the ENT Era, Late ENT Era.

Respectfully, you're making a pretty common mistake of setting a very high—if not impossibly high—bar before you even get started.

And, every switch practical? You'll never get over that bar...only limbo under it.

Perhaps your goal is to create sets rather than a film? If you also make a film, that's nice, but your real goal is the sets?

Im not trying to do anything over night ya know, Its just me and my gf and a few local peeps right now. We all love Star Trek, im a film maker, and I love making films. The goal in the near future is just to shoot a small 15 min short about a Starfleet Officer displaced in the 21st century learning to deal with life, Whether it be driving a car to putting metal in the microwave. Its something that a time displaced starfleet officer would have to deal with. Its going to be more comedy then anything.

And yes the sets are important, After working on Phase II, I knew filming and propmaking were my calling. As far as funding goes, me and my gf and friend are sitting down this week to see what it would cost to get us started at least. I live in a state where most people live a hard life, So bringing Trek into this state, even this community will help out tremendously.

Here is the test of the opener for Star Trek Into The Mirror that I created in After Effects, it looks alot like JJTrek but I do like the look of his opening title sequence

Here is a radio prop I built for TOS Era Use- Used an old 60s Radio shack walkie talkie- This is the Mark 2

You never answered the question. How much money do you think this will cost? Ya kinda need to know this before starting a crowd funding effort.

As a fellow Michigander Trekkie, I'll be keeping my eyes on this. I'd be happy to help in whatever ways I can.

Since your teaser is set in the ENT era, it may be worth reaching out to the Horizon crew, since their production also takes place in that era.

I did just send them a message on facebook

This summer our goal is to shoot about 5 5 min shorts about a time displaced redshirt adjusting to life in the 21st century and trying to find a way back home. We will be building a TOS Era Shuttlepod for this.

Our goal in the next year is to find a location for the studio and get a bridge built, with an eventual goal to recreate every set including main engineering. Essentially recreating Desilu Stage 9. We plan to launch an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds. We are still attempting to figure out how much we will need to find a building and build at least the bridge.

We are in need of VFX artists, costumers, sound guys, you name it. Im a good camera guy and editor and decent at setbuilding.

We would love to have you aboard trekker670. Once I get the Facebook page up you can forward your contact information to me.

Recreating every set? Including engineering? Wow. That is a very hight bar you have set c64man1701. You'll be the James Cawley of Michigan. :)

I dont care if it takes me 20 years. I love Star Trek TOS, and to have the set recreated for trekkies to come see and enjoy, and film there fan films and productions would make me a very happy man. Im just glad my girlfriend doesn't think im crazy. I'll be starting a video blog here soon to show what im working on, building props for Into The Mirror and Lost In Time.

Heres some stuff ive been working on for Lost in Time in after effects

You may not care if it takes 20 years to complete, but the people you would be asking to help fund this, will.

like I said, you don't want to make a fan film, you want to build sets.

Perhaps you should be clear that that's your goal, rather than making promises on which you do not intend to deliver in any reasonable time.

We have not made promises, just set goals.

Actually this summer we are shooting a number of 5 minute short films about a redshirt stuck in the 21st century adapting to life in it while he finds a way home. We do have every intention to shoot a film. Script for the first episode is in rough draft form right now, which takes place right after the events of In A Mirror Darkly Part 2, as a prequel to what happens in Mirror Mirror, eventually you will see a sequel to Mirror Mirror, but there is a whole gap of time between Hoshi Sato taking over the empire up until the ISS Enterprise is built. We won't be going into much detail about it other then showing the first captain of the Enterprise and the launch. Then it will continue after the events of mirror mirror.

I want to clarify that I am personally very excited by the people who are focusing on creating great sets and studios and not promising films. To me, Starbase Studios is the single most exciting new thing in fandom in a long time. There is no single proposed new fan series that I consider more exciting than Starbase Studios. If you took that as a put-down, let me assure you it was not intended as a put-down. A great set is a thing of beauty and a joy in and of itself. It also generously facilitates other people's dreams. I seem to have offended you. I apologize. That was not my intention.
