I think also the bombshell sized hints are Tendi is straight, Mariner is bi, Boimler is straight, and Rutherford may be bi as well.

Colm Meaney is probably out of their price range now.

    They constantly reference DS9, though.

I hope they can get Ezri next season.

No, and DS9 is my favourite series.

I just realized, this would be a great chance for Michael Dorn to play Worf as the guest captain next season, even if just for a few episodes. Worf has around the right experience to be a captain of a low-level ship temporarily just after Nemesis, and Dorn gets to live his dream for a short time.

Because male dolphins hit on him?

    8/10. Solid and exciting finale.

weJ duJ was a pretty tough act to follow, admittedly, and I didn't love everything here. I've gotten sick of Petty-Assed Abandonment-Issues Mariner and the constant emotional whiplash of her relationship with her mom; most of the time the episode spent on that frankly could have been used to flesh out the much more interesting glimpse we finally get of Jennifer and Becket building a relationship. (Yeah, I kinda ship them... but shipping or no, it was cool that we got to see Mariner grow in this particular respect.) Tendi's "misunderstanding" with Dr. T'ana struck me as a bit forced, too: I get that she's a bit insecure about her relationship with the CMO, but we've also seen by now that D'Vana is made of somewhat sterner stuff than this. It felt like the kind of artificial miscommunication that mediocre sitcoms rely on.

That said, making this a more adventure-focused episode was an interesting choice and it was really well done. There was still lots to like: the dolphins in Cetacean Ops were very funny, Boimler getting to save the day (and nearly drowning!) was cool, Jennifer saving Mariner and the whole rescuing-the-*Archimedes* premise, that casual hint about some Section 31-style stuff going on with Rutherford's implant... all really good. I was quite tickled when I finally remembered who Sonya Gomez was, good to see her get some screen time as a captain. And the final cliffhanger, with the darkly humorous implication that the Pakleds accidentally blew up their own planet with their backup bomb, was neat. I wonder who's really going to turn out to be behind Captain Freeman's arrest.

    Looking forward to next season.

I kind of see Rutherford as being Ace or Aro**, maybe both. He has a deep abiding love for technology, but people don't really interest him beyond friendships. Whether that goes further, we don't know, but for the moment, I'd say Ace/Aro is a safe bet.

**For those not in the know: Ace = Asexual, Aro = Aromantic.

So who is this weirdo with a riding crop that Mariner doesn't want to be captain of her ship?

Amusingly, I think the show is pretty straight forward with its revelations so my fandom speculation radar is thrown.

    :)

So Billups is the primary ace member of the cast because they broadcast it loudly.

He thinks Ensign Barnes is "hella hot" and has been on at least two dates with her.

Tendi might be Ace, but Rutherford is not.

Those were beluga whales in Cetacean Ops, correct?

I thought Gomez was killed on Mars along with those other mutants in a bar? Or am I thinking of something else?

    Pakled Planet was destroyed completely?

    To be contondered?

    Oh wow!

Easily a 10, a fantastic episode. So much stuff and so well done, hard to believe they topped last season’s finale but they did it. Also didn’t see the cliffhanger coming, looking forward to next year.

Only criticism I can imagine someone making is for the improbable science about the planetoid exploding, but it’s pretty much a trek staple. Also, as someone who’s been following the recent solar activity and knows well about its dangwrs to us, I was thrilled seeing a representation of something similar on Star Trek.

    Really fantastic. Wow.

Yes. This was confirmed by McMahan talking about "the Belugas" on the aftershow.

I mean, Tendi seems pretty non-ace given how much she pines for Rutherford waiting for him to catch a clue.

Mariner is bi, Boimler seems to be too. Tendi seems to be ace and I'm not sure about Rutherford, but he's been shown on dates with women. I don't recall him showing any attraction to men so far.
I thought they addressed that by making it clear that she wants to be friends. Men and women are capable of being close friends without any sexual attraction.

No, it's partially true. McMahan did announce Mariner's bisexuality via twitter, referencing her relationship with Captain Ramsey as a prior romance, but the show itself hadn't provided any clues (later it would include a quick reference by Mariner to having dated girls and "nonbinary babes" in the past).

I don't think McMahan has made comments about any other character's sexuality.
