However, since that first episode, he's demonstrated almost none of them except "nice guy/likable", which is a recipe for boredom.
I get where you're coming from but shows are so full of jerks nowadays that a nice guy character is exactly what I want. Same with Tendi..

I don't want to fall in with the "because it's Star Trek, there must be a serious explanation for all the comedy" crowd, but even I felt that Mariner's insubordinate behavior in the company of the senior staff and visiting captains/admirals should have resulted in brig time or court martial. They need to maintain some illusion that this is the same Starfleet as in the more serious shows.

I guess she and Rutherford are not destined to be a couple, unlike what we saw in the first episode. They do make a fun team though.
Maybe they're going for a "will they or won't they" thing.

Edited to add: Sense-Orrs!
FWIW, the closed captioning was spelling it "Sense-Oars".

I agree they could have done a bit better in terms of characterizing the Tellarite captain and why he chose to fuck up.
To paraphrase Sarek, Tellarites do not fuck up for a reason...they simply fuck up.

Star Trek is not about the lives of straight people in a world of LGBTQ+ people, so to compare Queer as Folk to it in terms of representation is ridiculous. And, as said, there were straight people in it too, so it's a doubly terrible analogy.

I am starting to get the sense that Mariner is taking advantage of the fact her mother is letting her slide. It seems to be a deliberate attempt to provoke Freeman directly, and Freeman, as frustrated as she is, can't bring herself to end her daughter's career. I wonder if Freeman, finally understanding her daughter's behavior can be dangerous (like what if Boimler had been killed by that bat'leth accident), feels forced to court martial and convict, would Mariner see it as justifiable punishment or instead use her mother as an excuse and blame her crappy life on her.

Mariner is kind of a young version of 2399 Raffi in that regard. Devil May Care and just no longer caring any more than she has to, exhibiting antisocial behavior in front of friends and loved ones but getting off light because of her circumstances.

So weird that in a show ostensibly oriented at kids they do a barely obfuscated reference to holodeck sex having to be cleaned up.

I thought this was a weak episode. The Tendi B plot was just generic sitcom tropes and cliches. The part about promoting her as punishment was amusing, but also people just obnoxiously bickering and being dicks for the sake of being dicks.

It just dawned on me that the Holodeck is also a "moist vessel"!

What happens on the Holodeck, stays on the Holodeck... literally and has to be cleaned out.

Except Mariner hasn't completely given up. She still sees something good to be gained out of Starfleet, despite the BS.
