Star Trek IV Question....

Slappy The Vulcan

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
How did Gilian get assigned to a science vessel so quickly after arriving in the 23rd century...it would be like posting Magellan on the U.S.S. Nimitz.

It was designed to give everyone a nice, happy ending... how pleased would everyone have been if she said, "Well, they don't know what to do with a time-traveling stow-away like me, so they're just going to keep locked up in an apartment until they think of something."

We don't know that it's a space vessel. It could be a large whale-watching vessel - and she's the only person on Earth with humpback knowledge for when Gracie has her calf (born in the graphic novel, "Debt of Honor"), so she's a guest specialist.

...Also, there's little indication as to when the trial takes place. Or how much time passes between the trial and the reassigning of the heroes to the E-A. Could be months or even years between the events, really.

But yeah, a seagoing vessel minding the whales seems a more logical assignment for the one and only expert on cetaceans than some starship five hundred lightyears away from the whales. Unless Gillian was getting on everybody's nerves, including the whales', with her constant fussing around...

I always assumed that the science vessel was some type of earth bound ship that was to watch and look after the two whales they brought back.

Anyway she would have seen Star Trek on the TV way back in the 70s, so she will will have a fair idea of whats gong on... ;)

I would think that Starfleet also assigned some kind of escort to help her acclimate to the new century. THat would make it a lot easier for her to function on any kind of ship.

I think kirk should have kept her in his apartment with the rest of his antiques which he was so fond of. She was a living piece of history. He could have kept her by the fireplace by his old gun collection. Or maybe she could stand by his telescope.

Hi,
I read a fan story somewhere which stated that it was a seagoing vessel, there was a reference to Spock assisting Gillian with her recearch by mind melding with Gracie, right up until she delivered the baby - Gracie that is, not Gillian!

But she hasn't been kept in a sealed plastic wrapper. Value would go down considerably. ;)
