So this just hit me. Arent whale air breathers? If so why didnt they let go of some of that water after they beamed the whales up lol arent they going to drown!?! After many years of watching this movie I just now noticed that lol.

There no doubt was an airspace in the whale tanks...

...Plus, the writers very well knew the whales couldn't breathe water - our heroes are explicitly alarmed that the whales will drown if they aren't released from the sinking starship.

The whales had just surfaced before they were beamed out. They can hold their breath for a while. They weren't in there that long.

...And the fact that they stayed so calm and didn't attempt to break out (and succeed!) is probably attributable to a telepathic understanding of what was going on. Spock didn't exactly have time to press his fingers on George's temple a second time, but we know he can affect females from afar, and Gracie could tell her hubby not to raise a ruckus.

I gotta admit, I would be very interested to see two humpback whales angrily break out of a BoP.

Humpbacks are capable of holding their breath for over 45 minutes, although this is uncommon.

Considering the measurements Scotty gave Dr Nichols at Plexicorp, the panels were 6 foot tall. The BoP looked like it had at least 8 foot ceilings, so that would leave plenty of breathable air space in the converted "whale tank".

I think it's gorbach, actually, FormerLurker. If Gorby had been a woman, his name would have been Gorbacheyeva, I believe. So they called the whales vessyl kit. :D

Possible. I only know for certain what Harve Bennett himself said at Star Fest '89, before William Shatner came out on stage.
