Star Trek Haynes Manual Discussion?

Overall I like it, it looks good the artwork is great and the new CGI sets look superb.
I am just disappointed they did not use the original NEMESIS Mesh for the Enterprise-E orthos and that they used in inaccurate TATV Enterprise-D mesh instead of the GENERATIONS/DS9/VOY mesh, which was based on the 6 foot Enterprise.
I liked the Enterprise-B and -C segments, though I expected to see a 3D CGI bridge mesh in those, too.

It is perfect for new fans. But cannot replace the complexity of the FACT FILES (IMO the best in-universe manual out there).

I came across this in WHSmith's today and had a look through.

Other than the pretty perspective cutaways (which bring back memories of the cover art on FASA's ship recognition manuals, and those lovely Enterprise-A and -D cutaway posters), there's nothing the longtime fan hasn't seen before. It's kind of like a cut-down, junior technical manual.

I can happily live without it for now.

Oh, and those spindly things on the captain's chair are apparently meant to be some kind of shock absorbers, and not awesome robot legs for the adventurous yet lazy starship commander.


ETA: I also noticed that it mentions the events of "Threshold", which no doubt caused the "Theshold isn't canon!" brigade no end of misery.

Taken as a whole from the different forums and reviews I've seen the opinion generally trends towards the negative. In fairness, though, like many things, we're seeing the most vocal aspects of fandom as opposed to the great silent majority, so who is to say. On Amazon the reviews skew towards the "disappointed" side while there are some who are pleased with it.

Taken as an overall impression I get that about a third of the purchasers are pleased with it while the rest range from "it's okay" to greatly disappointment.

I wonder what these means for a follow up edition? As I stated in the Trek Tech thread I wonder what the early sales figures are for this book. Chapters still does not have any in store stock but you can order it from their website.

I was in Toronto this weekend and the World's Biggest Bookstore had about 10 copies on hand. Just FYI.

I flipped through it, interesting and well laid out, but not something I'd purchase. My only books of that ilk are the series companions and the encyclopedia.

My local Chapters now has this book too... as well as finally getting Star Trek 365, which came out in, what, September? Must have been holding out for the holiday season?

I noticed a large bookshop in Sydney's CBD had put about ten copies of "365" on the shelf a few weeks ago. They are all gone already, and they've filled the space with other recent ST novels. As I suspected, even if diehard TOS fans think they've "seen it all before", the book has great appeal for gift-giving. Sadly, well-meaning relatives will pounce on this (and the Haynes) for the ST geeks in their lives who'll shrug ungratefully and say, "Seen it all before..."

Chapters finally got copies in and I flipped through the book and quickly found myself becoming disappointed and understanding of the complaints cited in Trek Tech. This book is not what I was expecting at all. It doesn't even include the teaser art (the aforementioned communicator, etc) and the cutaways are pathetic and small. I wear glasses and was having trouble trying to make out things. I will be passing on this.

Got this for Christmas. Quite happy with it. Sure it doesn't perhaps offer as much as it should do (like the JJ Enterprise or the refit NX-01) but I can't grumble.

I want more background material, I want more stuff that we haven't seen or read about it, especially with the little know Enterprises.

And yet, I seem to recall when "Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise" came out, there were ST collectors screaming, "Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! It's all wrong! They're making up stuff that was never in canon!"

And, if you got your dream manual, and then future novels, comics, episodes or movies overruled the information Haynes provide, again we'd hear the screams of "Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! It's all wrong!" and "Why weren't the filmmakers making use of information that has been provided to them?"

Sounds a lot like James Dixon from the old USENET Treknology days....

It says its the fourth ship to bear the name but then lists the D as the sixth, I've counted them up a couple times and I can't see how it can be 4th. 1) NX01 2) 1701 3) A 4) B 5) C 6) D 7) E Am I missing something?

The ship from ENT is an Earth Starfleet vessel, not a United Federation of Planets Starfleet vessel. So some people count or don't count the NX-01.

But, Enterprise-D is the fourth class of UFP Starfleet starship to bear the name "USS Enterprise": Constitution class, Excelsior class, Ambassador class, Galaxy class.
