Star Trek Fundamentalism

Man. My ignore button has been feeling real lonely ever since I took Polaris off my list way the heck back in October (he's since become one of my favorite posters, and I'm not sure whether this is because he's changed or I did. Disturbing thought. Anyhow).

Disturbing indeed.

It may just have been that the election ended.

as i said before there is nothing new under the sun in this thread.
that the movie would split trek fandom was laid out many moons ago within the future of trek forum right after the announcement about the movie/

heck some of us actually saw it start to happen in threads back there.

even then i still dont know it is will be the greatest split we have ever seen.
the one with the first season of tng was pretty bad.
each of the subsequent shows bought their own heated debates.

Yes but now we have the technology to wipe the other side out in a nuclear internet war, sure it will render Trek BBS uninhabitable for centuries and will likely destroy a good portion of the internet, but would it not be worth it to be proved right for all time since their won't be anyone left who disagrees with you.

It matters not.

Such people will fade away as easily as the memory of the last 13 years will fade away when the second coming of Christ in the form of JJ is upon us.

Not long now.

My way deals with them faster

I enjoyed the last 13 years of Star Trek. In fact, although some of it was a bit dodgy - It was still Star Trek more or less. In my opinion...

But.

I am quite happy to throw the entire thing out and start over, In fact - I have avocated this several times. Were it up to me I would have cleaned the decks and started over.

So, if I enjoyed the vast majority of the Berman era (despite its flaws), yet embrace and indeed welcome change - where do I fit in?

You've still not addressed this question even though it has been asked many times.

Same here. I don't see why this is such a big deal. Loved TOS, TNG, ENT...don't have a problem with wiping the slate clean.

Love TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT plus all the films... and I can't wait
for a new begining.

Even Roddenberry himself before he died said he hoped for this day.

Count me in as another one who is very fond of the existing Trek but is also very much looking forward to the new movie.

I would love a movie set in the original series with the details as close to canon as possible while telling a new, exciting story. I'd also love a movie set in Steven Cole's Starfleet Universe with fighters and pseudo-fighters and space control ships and huge fleet actions, but -- again -- keeping true to that universe's canon.

And finally, I'd really, really love to see the slate wiped clean and a whole new stab at Trek taken with a fresh vision and updated ideas lifted from the best of contemporary science fiction and futurism. Look at everything from Kirk to Klingons, warp drive to Vulcans in an updated light. A new look that sets Trek in a well-thought-out 'reality' and then proceeds to tell smart, science fiction stories both hard and soft.

I don't think this movie will fall into any of those categories, although I think they think they're stabbing at option three. There are things about the look of this film that I just don't agree with, but ultimately it's the writing that really matters and still pictures of a phaser prop or malformed Enterprise don't tell me anything about that.

The answer is obvious, you rule nothing out and you rule nothing in.

The OP is clearly not directed at you.

I'm playing devils advocate for the most part. :D

The OP refers to an extreme example, when in truth - there are a number of differing opinions on how successful trek has been in recent years. In the end, the shows stifled due to simulacrum.

I quite enjoyed trying to work out the registry numbers, performing mental gymnastics to explain away canon violations, and I thought some (but not all) of the soap opera elements were quite good. You forget a lot of these TV series were children of their time, as indeed was TOS. A lot of the canon obsessing came about due to video recorders and the sheer number of Trek episodes created. There isn't a single person here who hasn't tried to justify something that conflicted with another episode. UESPA? Khan knows Chekov? :wtf:

It doesn't matter, but when you spend your life watching Star Trek...again, and again...you can't help it when you notice something.

Let the last 20 years be the last 20 years. I don't think the zealots are shouting that loudly any more. ;)

Quite funny I thought. Not sure I see the relevance to the topic at hand.

There was a reference to Old School.

So - why not?

Now that was funny.

It's pretty good.

Back in the day when Trek was good - the producers of this short had good material to work with.

There will be people that see this as the Trek version of The Satanic Verse's though. I will need a police bodyguard for posting it.

Can't see it.

I would have thought that this would upset the "zealots" more.

:techman:

A split in fandom is upon us it seems to me.

More like a merger.

1987: Old Trek (TOS) vs. New Trek (TNG)

1993: TOS vs. TNG vs. DS9 or Old Trek vs. New Trek vs. Newer Trek

1995: Still Old Trek vs. New Trek vs. Newer Trek, except Newer Trek can now be subdivided with the introduction of VOY.

2001: TOS vs. TNG vs. DS9 vs. VOY vs. ENT. That's the plain, simple version. Without different groupings and combinations.

.
.
.

2009: Old Trek (1966-2005) vs. New Trek (2009-whenever)

Still a simplified version without all the details but the bottom line is that it's a merger.
