I'm playing devils advocate for the most part. The OP refers to an extreme example, when in truth - there are a number of differing opinions on how successful trek has been in recent years. In the end, the shows stifled due to simulacrum.
I quite enjoyed trying to work out the registry numbers, performing mental gymnastics to explain away canon violations, and I thought some (but not all) of the soap opera elements were quite good.
You forget a lot of these TV series were children of their time, as indeed was TOS. A lot of the canon obsessing came about due to video recorders and the sheer number of Trek episodes created.
Let the last 20 years be the last 20 years. I don't think the zealots are shouting that loudly any more.
