I was inspired by Star Trek: Frontiers to develop my own version of a Trek series. I think I found an idea that could work.

I want it to be Star Trek meets The West Wing - a series following the President of the United Federation of Planets, shortly after Voyager has ended. President Jaresh-Inyo is assassinated, only a few weeks after his Vice President is removed for providing confidential intel to the Orion Syndicate.

Instead, new Vice President Thryak Shalan, an Andorian, is elected President of the United Federation of Planets. He has to deal with the implications of the assassination; his advisors urging him to go to war; and if the Orion Syndicate is involved. And that's Episode One.

My only question is, is there any Trek that deals with the political side of this universe (outside of what we've seen in Deep Space Nine, of course). If there's a series of extended universe novels dealing with the President and his staff, I may just cry.

Why? Just ignore them and write your own story. That's what I do. There's nowhere any rule that you must follow official Treklit or even shows' canon in your fanfic. Your imagination is the only limit

Well, if I had my way, Dukat would have killed Worf, not Jadzia. And DS9 would have gone for fifteen years. Alas...

But that's a good point!

Have it your way and do it! There are many Alternative Universe stories out there and I don't think anyone would be surprised to see one more. And no Ezri Dax could be worth reading

To be fair, I'm not an Ezri hater. She just can't hold her own when compared to Jadzia! I did plan on having Ezri's successor be Federation Security Advisor...

^ Don't be disgruntled. Tell your story anyway. As was mentioned above there are many different realities and more than one way to depict something in the Star Trek universe, in no way are the novels meant to be the definitive take on a certain subject.

War with who? In DS9, Orion Syndicate appears to be some kind of a mob in space.

If you think of it like an allegory, the Orion Syndicate (in this instance) would be Al Qaeda, and this would be a War on Terror (with homeworlds known for Orion Syndicate activity filling in for the Middle East). I probably should have made that clearer...
