Nicely done, you’ve certainly caught my attention.
I liked your portrayal of the crew, and the awkwardness of Tuvok’s trying to find a place in the social dynamic of his new assignment. As has been mentioned earlier, all the characters rang true here, and I like your light, jovial take on Sulu. The man could obviously be a stern leader when necessary, but it’s nice to see a captain that knows how to have fun.
Started reading this today (the second best way to introduce yourself to a new forum -- give feedback!), just a bit ago. I really liked the first part with Rand and Sulu fencing; you've captured a long-time camaraderie, and still some of Sulu's wonderful derring-do! I also really like Tuvok's introduction, both in him chiding himself for not being open-minded, but also not being able to overcome his own issues with it.
The tension between Rand and Tuvok, more Rand, was fascinating as well. Makes me wanna dig and read more (which I will doubtless do here as time permits). Love Sulu and Rand sharing a drink, and laughed unexpectedly at the introduction of the PotC movies.
Good work!
Thank you all! Yes, I
really enjoyed writing this tale. I'm
very pleased to know that y'all enjoyed reading it!
BTW, the PotC element was something I'd wanted to write for a
long time.
Trivia note: In the beginning of Sulu's second fencing scene (the one with Tuvok), the "old pirate ditty" is, in fact, the classic jingle from the ride!
Definitely look forward to seeing more--just like others here, since this resolved so quickly but left so many character threads hanging, it really feels like this was just a teaser and there SHOULD be more behind it.
Keep it coming!
I definitely do feel like there should be more here and I'm hoping we'll see it. You do an excellent job with these canon characters and I liked your portrayal of a young Tuvok and especially how you captured both the fun side of Sulu and the...somewhat disenchanted side...of Rand.
More please...
Again, thank you.
Unfortunately, it'll probably be a while before I get the time to write a sequal. College, and all that. *sigh*
Not to worry, though. Anyone like to pick up on this, and write a sequal of their own?
Okay! Thanks for the feedback, everyone! Now...I've got a whole bunch of other short stories in the ol' MS Word folder. Here's a brief list:
DS9: O'Brien's Song: My very first Trek short story. O'Brien-centric, set sometime in the 1st Season.
TOS: Forgive & Forget: A Janice Rand tale, told from her point of view, set during and immediately after "The Enemy Within".
TNG: B-4 and After: Set shortly after NEM...unsure exactly when. It center's on B-4's growth, centering also on Geordi and Leah Brahms.
Which one would y'all like next?
