Star Trek Enterprise: Rise of the Federation - Tower of Babel

That is a really beautiful cover. I'm guessing the Endeavour and the Pioneer?

Now, a "young officer with a vital destiny"... could that maybe be
one of Kirk's ancestors? At least one of them was serving aboard the Pioneer.

That is a beautiful cover. What a huge improvement over the last one. The story synopsis sounds promising, too. Can't wait!

Love that cover too!

But....nation? Why does the blurb keep referring to the Federation as a nation?

Isn't it?

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/nation?s=t&path=/
1. a large body of people, associated with a particular territory, that is sufficiently conscious of its unity to seek or to possess a government peculiarly its own

...

1. an aggregation of people or peoples of one or more cultures, races, etc, organized into a single state

...

Political sense has gradually taken over from racial meaning "large group of people with common ancestry."

That is a beautiful cover, and it sounds like it'll have a great story to go with it.

The cover looks gorgeous, and I am so pumped for this one. Exploring the Rigel system? YES!

I'm with you, Christopher. That said, I was recently struck by a real-world conversation I had with a fellow Trekkie, who balked at the notion of calling the Federation a "nation." After thinking about it a bit more, I can see how one could interpret canon to depict the Federation as an international entity, much like a much stronger United Nations.

But still. The novelverse has clearly established the Federation as a nation (perhaps as a "nation of nations," but still), and that's the interpretation I tend towards as well.

The definitive novel 'verse guide to Rigel!

I have a friend on a Mass Effect role playing site who has an unusual fondness for Rigelians and a real appreciation for Enterprise. He's thinking about trying some Trek lit, and this would be perfect for him.

Also, I agree that the cover is gorgeous.

I like the idea of thinking of the Federation as a "nation of nations", not unlike how the UK has been described on occasion. The UK's components: England, Wales/Cymru, Scotland, and Northern Ireland/Ulster...with the possible exception of the last two (which we can debate elsewhere on TrekBBS) have long held to still consider themselves nations in their own right despite their participation in the UK as we know it today.

Love the cover. Love that Drexler's (?) refit for the columbia class is on a cover. The blurb sounds great too! World building and diplomacy...sounds like a perfect CLB book. Pre-ordered already :techman:

I really like the cover art.:techman:Doug Drexler did a great job with the artwork. That's an intriguing synopsis it will be interesting to see a storp about the Rigel worlds and political intrigue and spies. It will be nice to see Captains T'Pol&Malcom Reed expoloring the Rigellian worlds and the Orions trying to stop Rigel from joining the Federation sounds like a great story .I can't wait to get this book!

High anticipation already for this novel and a great cover just sweetens the deal. Miles better the last cover.

Can't wait for this novel. It's the Star Trek novel I'm looking forward to most this year. I'll be buying it the day the eBook is released. :D
