Star Trek Encyclopedia 3rd edition question

I'm not sure if this is the best forum for this question or not. I know the encyclopedia pertains only to the big and small screen versions of the Trek universe but none of the other forums seem like a good fit either and since we don't have a forum for reference materials, here I am.

Anyway, I have an original 1994 edition of the Star Trek Encyclopedia. As out-of-date as it now is, I'd still like to pickup a copy of the most recent 1999 edition. I've been shopping ebay and used book stores and am curious about the additions/updates. If I remember correctly, the third and final edition did not insert the updates throughout the manual like most would've expected and were included in a special color section by itself in the front of the manual. If I'm correct in my assumption, is this section bound into the book or was it like a special little additional booklet?

If I purchase one, I just want to make certain it isn't something that could be left out. If it is a separate small booklet not bound into the main book, I just want to make certain it is included.

^It's bound into the book, at the back. And the whole thing is in colour, IIRC (certainly the 2nd edition is, as opposed to the 1st which is b&w).

Just flipped through my '99 edition, and it's a stem-to-stern update, with slick paper and color pictures, and the updated entries inserted throughout. They're not in a separate section.

Definitely worth picking up.

As an aside, I noticed 1997 listed in the copyright dates. Might there have been a '97 version, with the updates in the back?

The Star Trek Encyclopedia 3rd edition 1999 supplement is additional pages 577 to 684 bound into the book, before the Appendices A through H further to pages 685 to 745.

Thanks guys. Just what I needed to know. It seems like there was a CD-Rom version too. I need to see if I can come up with an old copy of that one. I have the old original Omnipedia somewhere but I need to see if I can come up with the final version.

Pocket's editors couldn't get the numbers to work with a fully integrated volume, so its essentially a reprint with a supplement at the back. Of course, for fans who already knew the previous edition of the encyclopedia from cover-to-cover, it was easy to just skim the new material. I guess if some of us weren't completists, we'd had sold off our second editions when the third edition arrived.

It seems like there was a CD-Rom version too.

The Simon & Schuster Interactive/Imergy CD-ROM set I have is dated 1997. It contains four disks: Ency98 Home (Installer and photo media), Ency98 Video (video media), TNG Episode Guide and DS9 Episode Guide. From memory, some of the video trailers on Disc 2 have glitches in common and refuse to load. Perhaps there was an online patch, but I don't think I followed it up?

The CD set I have is dated 1997. It contains four disks: Ency98 Home, Ency98 Video, TNG Episode Guide and DS9 Episode Guide.

Yeah, I don't think that's the final one. The final CD version had Version 3.0 stamped under the title and had pretty much the same cover as the print version of the 3rd edition.

For any that may be interested, I did notice that they've finally released an ebook version of the encyclopedia. It weighs in at about 25MB on the Kindle and a little over 90MB for the epub version.
