Star Trek: Discovery - what other starship classes will show up?

I would throw the Archer class in as something I would like to see

I'd guess the Kelvin/Einstein-class, and the Kelvin-kitbashed background ships from ST'09/Into Darkness (also used in the Prelude to Axanar fan film) "should" be in service at the time of Discovery, which definitely has some similarities to the Kelvin and her sisters (particularly the saucer rim, phaser turrets, larger size, hull colour and the spine down the rear of the saucer)

That said, with CBS and Paramount's Star Treks seen as "competing brands", it's possible there'll be no design overlap?

This is, CBS has the rights to JJ Abram Films, or at least they're part of their 'properties' according to their website.

I don't think we will see any of the Abramsverse starships (Kelvin, JJprise, Armstrong, Mayflower, Newton, Franklin) in Discovery for two reasons:
a) Because DSC is set in the Prime Universe and not the Kelvin Universe (and no it's not a "timeline" according to Simon Pegg).
b) CBS and Paramount are two different corporations nowadays with two separate film and TV franchises.

This is something I keep saying myself. Its an alt universe, we have seen dozens if not hundreds of those in trek. Spock and Nero did not just jump back in time, but crossed realities. To me its pretty clear the Kelvin reality is not just a timeline. The ships styling and tech style is not the same. The ages of some characters are not the same and the two biggest things that prove this to me are Sulu and the Franklin itself.

That's likely the main reason, keeping the movie and TV productions separate.

Since the new Encyclopedia finally canonises the Prime and Kelvin timelines sharing a past until 2233, they are still one universe at this point, but legally there's not as much they can do.

There are words cut off, but it seems to say effects may preceed the triggering event, kinda like what Simon Pegg said. I suspect it's been done to future-proof two completely separate creative teams furthering Trek's 23rd century. It's inevitable they'll establish events and backstory incompatible with a 2233 divergence point.

They are calling it the Kelvin Timeline but they are treating it like a pararrel universe. They even say so themselves.
And CBS and Paramount's creative departments do not look like they're exchanging notes.

I've said it since 2009. They tried to offer a gift to the fans by saying "No, that old continuity still exists. He's old Spock to prove it." Was ultimately a bad call. Just do the clean reboot. Don't pay it lip service, because it will only create a headache. I've always looked as the Kelvinverse stories as what Batman Begins is to Batman 89. They're just different beasts.

It's for the best to isolate the JJ-verse as much as possible, asides from the oddities of the bizarrely huge ships and lens flare generators it also has things best ignored like planet to planet transports, awkward continuity and plot holes bigger then the missing bit of the Vengance's saucer.

The transwarp beaming is established to be from the Prime universe. TNG's "Bloodlines" establishes very similar subspace beaming which crosses light-years. In DS9, the Dominion had similar abilities which they used whenever the plot required a quick escape. Many TOS aliens of the week had similar abilities.

I honestly wonder what show fans who are bothered by transwarp beaming have been watching for the past 50 years!

Probably TNG, VOY and ENT. In TNG the subspace transporter was considered highly unstable. In TNG again the inverter was fatal to the user. In VOY the spatial trajector was incompatible with Federation technology. In ENT the sub-quantum transporter was flawed and never worked.

Besides, who needs starships and shuttlecraft when you can safely beam yourself 90 light years away! That's what the Q are for! ;)

Dukat even used an extr-long range transporter from Empok Nor IIRC
In TAS, the Vedala had something similar.

I'd love to see a Miranda Class starship with a TOS aesthetic.
I agree. Something like the Surya class…

…or the Coventry class…

…from the Ships of the Star Fleet: Volume One.
Or something like the Anton class…

…from FASA's Federation Ship Recognition Manual.

I was thinking something more like this. :)
