Star Trek Discovery to drop F-bomb (at least twice)

I, personally, have no problem with the F-bomb. I use it daily. I do however, have issue with it in Star Trek. I got into Star Trek when I was 8 years old. Paramount and CBS both seem to be oblivious with the importance of bringing in young viewers who grow up as fans. Parents probably won't want to watch "mature" Trek with their children.

If they do this, it will be the first Star Trek series I can't watch with my dad because he's an ultra religious conservative and would never watch a show that has language above "damn" or "hell". Kinda upset I'm going to have to forefeit this family show with the man who got me into Trek. :(

By the way, I agree with you. It's lowers standards that other (TV) Trek didn't do. Didn't have to do.

Well, we had shits and bullshits in the TNG movies.

It's clear that they're trying to go Game of Thrones-ish. They've hinted at it enough. Just as long as they don't go too far I can handle the occasional bit of profanity. I'd also prefer if sex and nudity were kept to a minimum, not because I am a prude but rather I just don't think that's what Trek is about.

I'm not thrilled about it. I grew up on TOS reruns and I remember when Kirk said "Let's get the hell out of here" at the end of "The City on the Edge of Forever", it surprised me (as a kid) because I never heard it on Trek before and at the same time it showed what an emotional toll the death of Edith Keeler had on him.

When I heard McCoy call Spock "That green blooded son of a bitch" in ST:III, I actually cringed because it seemed so out of place.

Maybe I'm a dinosaur but if I think F bombs should be left out of Discovery.

No show or film is intrinsically worse - OR better - if it has more swearing.

And it's also important to point out that asking questions about swearing doesn't necessarily mean one is a stuck-up Puritan. To raise the question "do we really need to hear Trek characters talk like Al Swearingen?" is not necessarily a bad thing.

Me, I really don't care how they talk, as long as it sounds natural for whatever character is speaking. Some people sound more honest when they swear, some don't. Just have to find the right balance.

So it's okay to have someone screaming in agony as the get vaporized by a disrupter but drop an f bomb in the middle of a heated moment and *gasp* "who will think of the children!?". My god

Well, when I grew up, seeing someone vaporized wasn't that bad because we knew it wasn't real. Words don't fall into that category, they are real, either spoken on TV or spoken by me. If my parents heard me say "shit" in my younger days, I'd either get slapped or a dose of red pepper sauce. Saying "Fuck" wasn't even considered because of the imagined consequences. But hey, times are different these days.

I agree 100%, but yeah, it makes or breaks my dad watching it with me, logical or not. But we're asking a religious person to be logical...perhaps a bridge too far. Also won't be able to watch this with my 9yo nephew.

And I don't mean for my comment to come as holier than thou, the only thing that is disappointing is the little kids who can't watch with their parents. But I doubt it's Goodfellas

Knowing it's not real makes no ioda of a difference, I know that when someone gets their head chopped off In game of thrones it's fake. Does that mean an 8 year old should watch that? Hell no! "Oh disrupters are fake and that disintegration looks real fake, it's okay". Someone KILLED someone. It's simple really, 8 year old says "fuck" they're in a shit ton of trouble. They do the other thing, well you know....

So the gay couple wouldn't have already ruled it out, but the one or two F-bombs would?

I'm a religious person (well, person of faith, I don't like religion) and I'm logical. Also looking forward to Discovery, gay couple, F-bombs and all.
