    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Discovery strengths include a pre-planned arc which allowed for fewer filler episodes. A good core writing team (An Academy Award winner, A Writer's Guild Award nominee, a Trek novelist, et al), and a new outlook on Trek, one missing some of the dramatic straight jackets of previous Trek, and production design and execution without peer. Several episodes are now classics. Later nominated for Hugo and Peabody Awards, and winner of several others. Like TNG, this started a new franchise golden age.

Picard: A very solid first season that perhaps lacked a little direction at times. With 10 episodes, the scripts were generally tighter than old Trek, but a re-write/re-edit of 2 early season episodes left it feeling unbalanced, before coming back with 4 excellent entries to finish off. Micheal Chabon's contributions here cannot go unmentioned.

TOS: What can you say, the excellence of season one was "lightning in a bottle". Good sci-fi writers, some motivated producers, and sincere performances led to what became a classic. This was the gold standard of premiere seasons until contemporary Trek!

ENT: Something of a surprise to myself as well as probably others, but this placing is because the grades show while there were few major standouts, there was also none of the extreme lows of the series. Chalk one up for a solid season of Trek.

VOY: There were just enough good episodes here to lift this out of mediocrity into "ok" territory but there were some horrible missteps. Caretaker is still a very good pilot, the most expensive till that time.

TNG: Still my favorite show, and while I like some things about the season very much, there was just too much unevenness in the entire production, so sadly this falls to this place. A Peabody nom for this shows they were trying.

DS9: 3 Excellent episodes and lots of directionless blandness. It's easy to see why so many jumped ship. Seeds were planted for later greatness.

There we have it. The best of first seasons that often had to find their legs later on.

No. It was dreadfully written, poorly designed visually, and generally just sucked.

DSC has my second-favorite first season of Star Trek. The only one that beat it out, in my opinion, is the first season of PIC.

This will be an Unpopular Opinion, but I put the first season of TOS slightly underneath of them as only my third-favorite first season. One of the advantages of shorter seasons is that there's less room for weak episodes to creep in due to fatigue, a time-crunch, or having to fill a certain number of episodes no matter what. And I just prefer serialized story-telling and the way DSC and PIC are directed and produced.

I keep thinking...if Discovery had stuck the landing and produced a really terrific finale episode, it really would have been hard to beat...ever.

Picard will probably have a better 2nd season, good as it was.

I actually like the out-of-the-box solution they came up with to end the Klingon War. None of the choices were good, but that was the only one that put a stop to the fighting immediately.

And the Orion Embassy was my favorite part of the episode.

There's one thing I noticed over the course of the three combined seasons of Discovery and Picard: every time I love a choice they made or an episode they did, that's when bashers, detractors, what-have-you were most up in arms about it. "Point of Light" (DSC) and "Stardust City Rag" (PIC) are the most notorious examples.

To the point where now I have a saying, "All the right people hated it." That's how I know it's good or I'll probably like it a lot.

    I don't know whether I'd say
    TOS
    PIC
    DSC
    or
    TOS
    DSC
    PIC

But either way, the first seasons of the newer versions of Trek that have been on CBSAA are far more entertaining and cohesive than the first seasons of the 80's and 90's era shows. Even DS9, which is an awesome beast of a show, had a pretty bland and uninteresting S1.

for me Discovery is third. It’s the first place that is a toss up between TOS and Picard.

DS9 is next. I thought the first season was good. But the pilot was such a big home run that the rest of the season had trouble living up to it until the last 2 episodes.

agreed that Kurtzman Trek shows have had better first seasons than Berman Trek shows.

Totally agree on DS9 pilot. Even if it was just a stand-alone made for TV movie, it still would have been one of my favorite Trek outings.

DIS season one is enjoyable but there are so many pointless flaws it really hurts. It took me a long time to have the right mindset to give it a chance after getting really turned off part way through episode 2, and then maybe again in episode 3. I actually liked episode 1, despite thinking everyone's decisions on how to deal with the Klingons is stupid. Then again, I lacked a certain enthusiasm or usual Trek addiction because I didn't bother signing up for it, I signed up for Picard, then finally watched DIS.

It's actually hard for me to compare to the first seasons of other Trek's though, because I watched them the first time so long ago. Also, DIS has the advantage of being modern and therefore, in certain respects, more easily watched than say TOS. Same is true of TNG. Thinking back, I might like DIS season 1 more than ENT's first two seasons, but definitely not more than TNG season 1, which I rewatched part of recently. Better characters, better characterization, better stories all help TNG win out.

Voyager though, it's hard to remember, except I do remember thinking it was not quite as good as TNG, and one of my friends said he stopped watching it. But I stuck with it and ended up liking it a whole lot. I have fond memories of watching VOY, and nothing like that has really happened with DIS, not really PIC either.

With PIC I had enthusiasm for 6 out of 10 of the PIC episodes, and I suppose I still have that enthusiasm where as I never had it for DIS seasons 1 and 2. The PIC episodes I enjoyed watching also stand out far more than the DIS episodes I enjoyed, partly because the DIS episodes wash together in my mind rather than standing apart all that much. Even though I think PIC gets a little worse every time I think about it, I also think it is a first season I like more than DIS. That's especially true given the trouble I had getting past the second and third DIS episodes.

In contrast PIC's second episode, which completely quenched my enthusiasm for the whole show was recovered in episode 3, and I never considered not continuing even at its least engaging. If the final three episodes of PIC had been better designed this wouldn't even be a question of which first season is better, DIS has a lot more to work on. I write that even knowing that the entire basis of the PIC plot is flawed, then again I believe that about DIS too.

It's a toss up between dis season 1 and ds9 season 1 for me. With Picard in second place. The others don't even place. TNG, voy and ent all had first seasons I would equate to hot garbage.

I'd say TOS S1 edges it out. That Lorca twist annoyed me no end first time around.

I'd definitely rank it higher than Picard, and maybe ahead of Voyager's first few episodes. I liked the other series' first seasons more though.

TOS still has the best first season, imo, and after a few rewatches I've come to believe that DS9's first year is very underrated.

You seem to be passing off your opinion as fact. It's highly subjective of course, so for me, I find season 1 of Discovery almost unwatchable. Season 2 improved, until the writing fell off a cliff after the Talos episode and then it became as dumb and juvenile as before.

An arc that didn't go anywhere and that wasted FOUR episodes on the pointless mirror universe. A war between the Federation and the Klingons and they barely showed any of it.

    Really? Which ones?

It finished with 4 excellent episodes? I thought the common consensus was the last two were nonsensical and silly?

    - Terrible writing
    - Terrible characters

Not the greatest foundation to build a series on.

It's RAMA. Anything and everything new is, ipso facto, better than what came before. We move forward, not backward; upward, not forward; and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards t̶h̶e̶ ̶S̶i̶n̶g̶u̶l̶a̶r̶i̶t̶y̶ freedom.

The writing started out very poor and continues, apparently, to hover around mediocre on good weeks.

But, you know...a lot of us who were big fans of Enterprise way overpraised it during its run. We know how that worked out.

I'm got that impression after he was going on about getting 4 new Federation starship classes in the Picard finale, and how much better it was than DS9's fleet
