I knew something was weird about the Orion makeup and it being a full mask explains why there is something unnatural about them like the facial movements are so close to normal but the back of my brain is telling me something is wrong.
And the male one reminds me of this guy the way he moves

So... Shatner? XD

A 6.

This is probably the closest they've come tp a 'standalone' type episode (in the TOS/TNG vein) this season. Yes, I know it continued a lot of the season story threads; but IDK, the motivation of the Emerald Chain and their supposed threat didn't seem much. I also found the resolution to all the various 'threats' in the episode a bit too easy/pat <--- VERY on par with your average TNG episode.

Also, the Admiral agreed a but too easily to start this all off. He's at first VERY adamant about not riding the Discovery or it's special tech; and 10 seconds later, after a laughable 'persuasive argument', he's all in. Of course we still don't know just how powerful from a military standpoint the Emerald Chain actually is - ARE they really capable of standing up to Star Fleet IF Star Fleet decides they are a big enough threat tp really act against; or is it just show; and the fact is Star Fleet as it exists is scratched so thin/concerned with other goals we really d know about to just want to avoid any real conflict with the Emerald Chain?

Lastly - the EC wants Ryn back because he's 'aware of a BIG secret' - which is: "The Emerald Chain is low on Dilithium for their ships..." <--- Really?" That's the BIG SECRET? :cardie::vulcan::guffaw:

Sorry, but isn't the ENTIRE GALAXY in the proverbial 'same boat'?

So, yeah - I did like that the threads are progressing (and I like Michelle Yeoh, so I'm ultimately curious how her thread will resolve...); but yeah in the end the whole thing about Books ship being able to pretty easily all things considered being able to disable a heavy cruiser class ship so easily; plus the "Hey just amplify the message and ask nicely bit solution to the floating sea creatures (If they ARE native sea creature; they seem to come pretty far inland.)

I mean hell, the sanctuary has tech and a setup that blocks both Federation and Emerald Chain sensors and is pretty good at planetary protection; but they can't set up forcefields to keep these creatures out of their agricultural areas? Again, :cardie::shrug:

It isn’t just the makeup. In Enterprise, the males looked more interesting as they had markings and jewellery in their faces to give more more character. Here they just look like humans with green skin and rather generic hair styles

I didn't like that in ENT they looked like bald-headed, muscle-bound brutes. I prefer the DSC route. Not that you can't have Orions with markings and jewelry, but not all of them.

The Enterprise Orion males were overly muscled to give them that same physical appeal to female viewers that female Orions have to male viewers.

With Discovery's prosthetic head thing, they all look like walking plastic action figures, are basically the textbook definition of "uncanny valley" and I'd be surprised if Discovery Orions, even using pheromones, can elicit any reaction other than fleeing in terror.

OK, to all those who see something between Owo & Detmer... yeah, I see where you're coming from!
I dont see that becoming any more than good friends. Most likely we wont get a romantic storyline for either of them and given the limited time the show has with the crew I'll be glad if its not wasted on another sexual relationship

I wonder if it might be quicker to do so, as well as easier on the actors. I didn't realize that about Zhann. That sounds awful.
I think I remember Michael Dorn feeling quite a bit of schadenfreude during the filming of Apocalypse Rising when the actors playing his human crewmates had to wear full Klingon make-up and complained about it all the time. And conversely, the late René Auberjonois actually felt relieved because the Klingon make-up was far less extensive than his bulky Changeling prosthetics. I don't know about being easier on the skin of the actors, because I don't know whether Terry Farrell reacted badly to the prosthetics or to the facepaint that led to Jadzia being left out of the mission despite being the second resident Klingon expert after Worf.

Not to mention Second Skin, where Nana Visitor was extremely uncomfortable with her Cardassian make-up, not just because of her claustrophobia (which lead to her famously tearing it off at one point when the director suggested shooting a few extra scenes at the end of one day) but also because it meant she had to appear on set for make-up several hours before everyone else.

It's possible it doesn't go anywhere, but I still feel they're doing it on purpose.

Picard has shown that the tech for basic immortality was available as early as the late 24th century. This has not yet been addressed in Discovery. We have no idea if Vance is as old as he looks or a lot older, and he has not stated whether his Burn experience was firsthand or secondhand.
I’m surprised we haven’t seen ANY androids yet- that we know of. Just holos.

Well... That explains why the makeup looked so bad...

And on a note, it takes like 20 minutes to airbrush an actor/actress green.

Yup, if this was Face/Off and the contestants had put forward makeup as bad as the Orion's this episode, Glenn and Neville would have laughed them off the stage.
Precisely. I wonder if it was a case of “what can we do to soak up this massive budget we have!”

Just Susan Oliver and Yvonne Craig- and you FORGOT!?!
On the subject of Discovery's makeup, TOS even did better with Vina's disfigured look (and it's probably not easy to make Susan Oliver look bad). Discovery's disfigured Vina is still extremely attractive, speaking for myself as a male viewer, and completely unbelievable as someone who feels she has no choice but to remain on Talos IV (even TOS Vina barely got away with that in light of futuristic medical technology).

It reminds me of the complaints from female viewers of Gerard Butler's Phantom of the Opera, where his disfigurement basically looked like a bad sunburn and the Phantom was extremely attractive even with it (better looking than me), completely undermining the Phantom's declarations that his disfigured appearance had destroyed his life.

It just now occurred to me... They all look like... green Odo’s! :ack:

It’s sad to see Orions have gone back to their piracy ways after they only just started to change their ways in Lower Decks.

Why would I remember?

Then be surprised. I like them better.

Indeed, yes.

That line Saru says about Orions being slaves in the past is a novel reference correct? I don’t recall an episode mentioning that but I have read a few books that say that.

Vance: How sad that a former member of Starfleet like Osyraa could have fallen so far.

Saru: Osyraa is a former member of Starfleet?

Vance: Yes, D'vana Osyraa Tendi. Centuries ago, she was one of our finest officers, but then murdered the legendary Admiral Picard and stripped the technology in his android body for her own use to make herself immortal.

I feel a great disturbance in Trek fandom. As if millions of Lower Decks fans suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.
