For all intents and purposes what we are dealing with is an instance of spontaneous transmutation. But instead of lead into gold it's dilithium into quartz. Something that shouldn't happen and thus can't be planned for.
What does it matter how the dilithium fails? It ceases to do its job. It could also just disappear. So what? The ship should have a failsafe for that. Especially after *1000 years* of ship design. Again, dilithium has never been said to be anything but a rock which people hold in their hands like any other rock. It's not the dilithium that provides power. It's just a medium stuff meets through. It's inert already.

Don't think too hard, this is a universe where humans can make babies with aliens....;)

It's does what ever the plot requires.

Perhaps.

But I can't say I blame them. Without Starfleet to back them up, and without warp-capable ships to defend themselves, what would you have Earth do?

GIANT ORBITAL WEAPONS PLATFORMS, NO BIG ONES REALLY REALLY BIG ONES. :)

I mean, exploding consoles strike as being the same.

And the rocks, you forgot the rocks..... Like when Disco got hit this most recent episode rocks came down out of the walls, lots of little rocks.

So when did Earth decide the rest of their own solar system can go hang?

They didn't do that. They just can't afford to leave Earth unguarded for that long.

Without warp drive, Earth forces are now limited to travel within the solar system. So the longer they take to even REACH any of the other planets, the longer Earth is left defenseless. And they can't afford to take that risk.

Does that "elimination" include the supposedly active sensors on the Reliant? It's not an unknown system, the planets are numbered and I think counting is taught at Starfleet Academy.
If it were a "known" system, then why were they there searching for a 'dead' planetary body for the Genesis Experiment?
They should have known before entering the system if there were any likely candidates.

Kinda-sorta obvious to me that the system may have been listed on the star charts, but wasn't "known" because Kirk & Spock made sure that it wouldn't be.
It's even possible that Spock had the official Star Fleet charts altered by removing Ceti Alpha V as a listing.
Which would also explain why the folks on the Reliant weren't aware of the exploded planet, they had inaccurate charts for that system.
They went in seeing just what their (altered) chart showed them.

It was also apparent that they had been searching for a suitable planet for quite awhile and were becoming a bit complacent about it due to Carol Marcus' insistence that her "Exact Requirements" be met.
So they essentially weren't at the top of their game at that point.
(as well as they weren't expecting to run into anybody)
