Or Warp 7 or 8.

The Warp 7 breakthrough happened by sometime around 2161 based on the ENT finale so any significant improvement in warp drive after that would need to be a higher warp number or at the very least a recalibration of the warp scale where Warp 5 or 6 would be faster than Warp 7 or 8 on the old scale.

Since they recalibrated between TOS and TNG, doing the same between ENT and "The Cage" is what I'll go with. And that's what Tyler's retroactively referring to. ;)

In the meantime, I'm looking forward to Number One being promoted to Captain of the Enterprise, just to piss off the very specific subset of the Make Trek Great Again crowd who keep complaining about "SJWs".

I don't know but we're gonna need a sassy droid who likes to have sex with humans.
ummmm.....
DATA (he seemed to enjoy Tasha and vice-versa)

Pulse in a few short years we'll have this lovely young (android) Lady...

And apparently, when Kirk first sees her, he can't contain himself...

I wish we could have had three years of Majel as Number One instead of her tour as a lovesick nurse.

So if Discovery takes place after events in "The Cage", then Number One might not survive events of the season. She isn't mentioned anywhere else on screen that I know of, and it would open up the job to Spock. Hmm...

It's a big fleet, and if she were ambitious she would have got her own command somewhere. Serving on a 5 year mission as XO should have pole vaulted her career into a captain's chair somewhere.

John Byrne has her as the captain of the Yorktown in his comics.

EDIT: I believe she was also the Yorktown captain in Pocket's Captain to Captain miniseries.

My guess is she went off and became an officer on another ship after 2257. She may even have become a Captain if she desired to command her own starship, and her time as XO of the Enterprise under Christopher Pike could only help her get her own command if she wanted one.

Think of her as occupying the same position as William Riker will in 110 years' time. The XO of the Enterprise and having Starfleet occasionally offer you your own command if you want it. I could see Starfleet approaching Number One and asking if she'd like a promotion and her own starship.

Its possible. And if Pike and Number One are a couple (as has been hypothesized), I would certainly not discount that possibility.

You have a misunderstanding between NBC and Roddenberry (or so legend has it). NBC told Roddenberry to get rid of the character with no emotion, and he thought hey were making a crack at Number One not showing much emotion. So he got rid of the character, when they meant Spock.

Yeah she probably just moved up to her own command allowing Spock to take her place sometime before Kirk takes over the Enterprise.

I'm thinking that before Pike goes on the second Five-Year Mission (I'm thinking there has to be, given that it's still a ways before Kirk assumes command), Number One gets promoted to Captain of a Starship, moving Spock to both XO and Science Officer. That may even get addressed by the end of this season, setting the path toward TOS.

TBH, I know everybody loved "New Eden" as being all traditional episodic Trek and all, but I enjoyed this one much more, as it picked up a bunch of threads from season one, wove some new ones, made some TOS and other references, and dispatched some of the issues that bothered (other people) and forged ahead. It had a lot going on, but somehow I didn't feel as overwhelmed as I was by "Brother."

I liked "New Eden," but I thought it layed the traditional Trek tropes on a little thick. But I think I come to watch DSC looking for different things than I come to other series in the franchise.
