That's what DS9 is for. Less formal than TNG, but intelligent writing nevertheless.
Oh please - DS9 had a number of sub-standard eps in its first 18, like "Move Along Home", "Babel", "If Wishes Were Horses" and hell TNG's first 18 episodes were nothing to hold up as the 'pinnacle of Trek' with crap like "The Naked Now, "Code of Honor", and "Justice"

I could name more... ;)

The darker stuff doesn't bother me. Klingons have always had a dark bloody culture.

I don't mind the darker stuff either. For example, I LOVE Game of Thrones. And that's gorier and darker than Disco by far.

I just don't find the Klingon's and their politics compelling.

He propped up the show. And if you're going to show someone DS9, you should skip to Sisko with a shaved head and goatee anyway. ;)

I think the second season is underrated but, for the un-initiated, Season 4 and on is the way to go.

There are a handful of first and second season episodes that I would recommend just for context moving forward, but I think the show started to pick up speed with its third season rather than its fourth.

I have a feeling that we haven't seen the last of baby Voq. Although, I don't buy into the Albino theories, it would put an interesting twist on the Albino's vendetta against certain Klingon houses-- including Kor.
I don't think we'll get a connection that far out. The way that scene went makes me think that baby is going to reappear.

Looks like next week we get three plots again.

1. Negative space wedgie doing the typical "anomaly" things to Discovery.
2. Saru is sick, and his life is in danger (is this why they have to go back to his homeworld?)
3. Weird spore creature attacks Tilly.

IMHO the A/B/C plot structure doesn't work well with episodes less than 50 minutes, so this is a bad sign. They should have held off on the spore drama for at least a week.

A dialog heavy episode with bland, wordy, flat, on-the-nose discourse.

Mary Chieffo and Shazad Latif are just bad in this. Latif's delivery was often flat. Chieffo is handicapped by over done prosthetics.

This show continues to take itself very seriously. It gives off the facade of drama, while failing to create satisfyingly compelling story threads.

There's not much reason to care about this Spock red angel thing unless you're already interested in Spock due to your ST fandom; it's not a story line that's compelling on its own.

3/10

I actually loved that bit and chuckled out loud. Figures Pike is not an early adopter. I mean, he was still using paper print-outs in "The Cage." :)

It's funny, as Ash and Burnham were awkwardly standing there holochatting, I found myself wondering why anyone would consider that an appealing form of communication. People already use texts to avoid having to talk to other people, much less be seen in full length by them. And why would you want to stand up for a phone call?

Really good points. And, shoot, most people don't want to do video calls either. At least of people I know.

I also wondered why the show was going out of its way to point out holograms when in TOS everyone used screens.

It's cool and hip young viewers love that stuff?

The episode itself poked fun at the series' trope of using holograms for everything when the Starfleet officer speaks with Pike and he jokes that Pike seems to be one of only two people in the quadrant who still speaks to somebody else on a screen. It's as if even some of the writers know that it's starting to get a little ridiculous.

The majority of dialogue and character developments (and moments) in DS9's early days were great and laid some solid groundwork. There were episodes that made you think.

Even before the goatee, Sisko was giving compelling speeches like this:

And of course my favourite DS9 character Garak:

Listen to that exchange.

Far more intriguing than Yeoh running around in her leather Madam costume.

Yawn. This one gets a 5 from me. Pretty terrible ep and what was with all the spazzy camera movement?

And this is part of exactly why I think Season 2 of DS9 is underrated.

It's kind of funny that the Maquis were created for VOY and yet DS9 ended up doing so much more with them.

DS9 Season 2 has some excellent episodes. It's nowhere near as strong as the rest of the seasons that followed but for a sophomore season of a modern Trek series it's arguably the best of them all.

S1 was a short season, but Duet still holds up as some of the best philosophical trek. Emissary is my favorite of all the Trek premieres, just because it laid so much great groundwork that would be paid off later. Even loved Dukat's introduction. Best way to introduce the series villain.
