I'm over the Short-Tempered Stoic Noble Warrior Alien trope in general. Outside of Trek, whenever Stargate SG-1 dipped in Jaffa culture/politics I wanted to shoot myself. And it just got worse as the series went on, what with the "Jaffa Nation" or whatever it was. Ugh.
Hm that was my favourite plot development of SG-1.

Thinking about it more deeply, what the hell was the point of L'Rell and Voq's baby in the story? I mean, it's been put on a bus to a monastery, and the way Ash gave the lines made it essentially sound impossible that it will ever be brought back onto the show. Was this twist really just for some cheap drama for a single episode? It seems a mistake thematically if they just introduce it and then discard it. Hopefully either Ash or L'Rell will ultimately have some regrets about it.

Good for the most part. Could have been a lot better but at least we're getting a continuation of the Ash Tyler subplot and Klingons who speak clearer English and have facial hair. It's my least favorite of the three new episodes so far but an improvement over most of Season 1.

You know this, but TNG was a product of it's time. They used paintings instead of CGI, and didn't have 10 Million dollars per episode to waste back then.

I realize that. And the drama itself was fine I think. But it was a mistake to make out the factions tangling with Worf as major players within the Klingon empire, because it destroyed the sense of scale (since they couldn't do epic due to budget limitations).

TOS wisely had Kor, Koloth, and Kang all as commanders/captains. TNG epic-ed it up for no good reason.

Probably a cheap dramatic choice to add weight and dimension to their relationship. I wasn't too fond of it myself save for getting to see a baby Klingon with softer head ridges and other features. I wouldn't have introduced the element of a L'Rell-Voq baby unless I planned on following up on the child's fate once they left him on Boreth, but...oh well. At least the Klingons were tolerable or even enjoyable for one of the few times since the series started.

It was a pointless plot point make the high council think she lost something.

Wrong. Michelle Yeoh doesn't allow her name to get used into fake titles that aren't going to happen to appease a failing franchise.

Lol. That's your opinion. Studios and networks do these types of announcements all the time.

Tell me, why would this spin-off conveniently be announced during the premiere week of STD S2? When the show itself is supposedly years away from production.

That's a big red flag. That's a network move, to show confidence to investors and potential subscribers that STD and CBSAA are worth investing in.

It doesn't mean the Yeoh series would actually happen. But they are certainly using some of her current star power to sell this.

It's the same way ST4 wanted to use Hemsworth's name... and that was announced during the week of Star Trek Beyond's premiere.

We all know what became of Kelvin Trek 4.

Another studio, Sony, also did this with their Amazing Spider-man 'franchise,' of which Kurtzman was involved...amusingly.

It explains why Ash may continue to feel connected to L'Rell even though he has feelings for Burnham. Even if the kid isn't there, he exists.

Also, just because Baby VoqRell has been put on a bus doesn't mean he'll disappear forever. All of the dialogue in that scene felt very wink-wink and nod-nod.

I gave it a 7. A bit of a let down from last week. I still can't get into the Klingon stuff. Hopefully, with Ash leaving, we've left that behind. The less of the Klingons, the better. I'm hoping that we return to an adventurous seeking of clues in the mystery of the red angel.

Tilly and May are just another alien possession story. Not innovative. And, I kept mentally shouting, ask what it wants for fuck's sake. That's the first thing you want to know before you take it out. It obviously had goals and a plan. Learn about it. They had that chance in engineering where they knew what it was and May was there communicating with Tilly.

I can agree with that, but my problem with Klingons is I just don't care about the politics at all. Even when well done. I don't know what it is about them, but I really just never want to see a Klingon ever ever again in any form or incarnation.

It's like we can't get past 1.5 dimensions with the Klingons. I give Discovery credit for tossing the overdone honor 'n' glory stuff, but what they've replaced it with is no more engaging. It's tedious bickering among non-characters.

Did it strike anyone else as odd that they treated Spock's medical records like an old-fashioned paper file that could be physically taken? The way they talked, it sounded like there was only one copy. Someone should get Starfleet a scanner.

Mary Chieffo is supposedly "main cast" for this season, which means we're going to see more of her. Whether that means we'll be checking into Qonos regularly or she'll also be turfed out remains to be seen.

The 'Mother' part at the end (being described as a more powerful title than Chancellor) made me laugh out loud.

Yay for Klingon feminism? This episode wasn't subtle. Definite throwbacks to S1.

L'Rell's a series regular, despite not being in the credits. Her ugly-ass face will haunt this series till it's end.

I’m not nearly as high on this as some of you. I’d give it more of a 5 or 6. The Klingon stuff is really bad and I liked the Klingon stuff in TNG/DS9. The pink blood was a nice touch for those Klingon redshirts.

Pike is still fantastic and the Burnham/Amanda stuff was great. I think they semi-solved the Tilly thing a bit to quick though.

Really hated the “you and my grandmother are the only two that still communicate with screens” exchange between Pike and the starbase Captain.

The episode was too disjointed for me. Here was nothing to tie the three plots together. I'm glad tilly's ghost isn't going to drag on all season. And I'm glad Tyler is back. The search for spock is already dragging onto long for me.

I don't mind a section 31 ship out there and showing up to play once in a while but a whole show of them plus the Picard show? That seems like a lot of trek even for me.

If they did make L'Rell and Voq's child the Albino(unlikely, but hey, a fan can have dreams)then that would help explain his slightly unusual head shape for a Klingon of his time. As the child of two Klingons who may or may not have been part of a different and rarely-seen subgroup or even affected by the lingering legacy of the Augment Virus he would have a different physical appearance from Kang, Kor, Koloth and other warriors of that century.

Again, this is likely something the producers aren't going to do but it would be an excellent way to tie a bitter, abandoned child of two Klingon radicals to the criminal activity and violent anger that the Albino would display as an adult. Eschewing his upbringing by the clerics on Boreth and leaving to cope with his own feelings of anger and abandonment he could have pursued a life of crime and terror activity on the fringes of Klingon space, targeting famed warriors and military commanders like the three TOS Klingons for attack as a way to strike back against an Empire and a culture that he feels shunned and discarded him as an infant.

I really enjoyed the English subtitle switch to Klingon and then we hear them speaking English. That was really cool and should've been done from day one.

Agreed. Especially when you could barely hear the actors in Season 1 even speaking Klingon. That facial makeup was their own worst enemy. The reengineered makeup on L'Rell is a vast improvement.
