Another great delivery. Great development with the Klingons but of course, even better development with more of the Discovery crew. I love we get to see more of Saru's instincts and basic personality. The complexity is really starting to come together while also growing on it's own.

Such a great show.

A Star Trek character suddenly finding peace in their lives because of an alien/whatevers and then acting stupid is pretty damned overused, I almost started laughing at the absurd clicheness of it. They wasted a perfect chance to leave that freaking Saru behind on the planet. Now he has to keep being sad. Boo hoo. The Klingon stuff was OK, but I'm only really mildly interested in the outcome of this next week.

I was hoping for more from what I thought might be a nice planet story. With the long break after next week, I'll be saying bye-bye to CBSAA for a bit, maybe come back during the middle of the 2nd half of the season. I like Discovery, but I can't say I'm a big fan of it.

Immediate reaction:

Very good episode. The opening battle was tense and I love how they tried to sacrifice the Discovery to save the Gagarin (anyone still think Lorca is an evil villain?). Best pew pew of the series thus far. Stamets fluctuating personality is now officially worrying me. I liked that Tilley was able to get him to talk it through a little...but this might not end well.

The planet side stuff was brilliant. They did a great job creating a realistic alien world and a cool environment with unique properties. I thought the Pavans were a fascinating life form. I liked the twist that Saru wasn't being purposefully or malevolently manipulated (like most other Trek stories would have done) and it was truly his reaction. Doug Jones blew the doors off it in this episode. I'm not really sure where the random wigwam came from...that threw me for a bit of a loop. The whole thing felt very VERY TOS.

Klingon stuff was more entertaining than usual...but still confusing. I'm not really sure what L'Rell was doing. If anyone can explain that better it would be good. Was she just manipulating Cornwell or was she legitimately trying to escape with her? Is Cornwell dead or to be revived later?

8/10 easily. I'm tempted to go higher, but it wasn't quite as good as I thought it would be. I think I had massive expectations though.

I think it's also important to acknowledge how this opted for the classic Star Trek dramatic existential dilemma (something it's always done well) instead of the try-hard grimdark high-drama it's been trying to do.

No plot period. It was incredibly boring. This was supposed to be the mid season cliff hanger? No wonder they added another episode. This is a filler episode that can be overlooked in a 26 episode season but in a 15 episode season? I expect higher quality.
I think next week is the cliffhanger.

I think the space battle was the best we've had so far (in Discovery), and it's nice that the characters finally got some fresh air on an away mission. Up to now, they've spent a whole lot of time on the ship.

* Mary Chieffo has quickly become my favorite Klingon. Aside from the fact that she's clearly much better at speaking in those prosthetics (her dialogue is much more fluid), I like that she's far more complex than many of the other Klingons. She really does believe in honor. Plus, I can't wait until L'Rell kicks Kol's ass.

* Tilly is awesome.

* Stamets is clearly feeling the full effects of the dimension/space hopping from the spore drive. Apparently, he's experiencing multiple realities and it's getting harder for him to tell them apart. In one reality, it seems Tilly was a Captain. I like that idea.

* We get to see Saru experience peace for the first time ever, and it was kind of creepy. I liked Ash's face when Saru started caressing them both.

* The Pohvans are a unique species, something akin to the Organians. It should be interesting to see what happens to them in the finale.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, and it had me tuned in 100% the entire time.
I rate it as "Excellent." 10/10

The finale is going to be awesome.

Oh yeah. And one more thing. This had theme oozing of its ears. But I'm too hunger over to even attempt to try to go into more detail.

I'm not going to rate the episode on a one to ten scale, because I have a hard time even ranking it. Sections of it were by far the best out of any Discovery episode to date, sections of it fell flat, and it left me wondering about the series as a whole.

The good: Visually speaking, this episode was a feast from beginning to end. The opening combat scene was the best in the series to date - lasting longer than a few seconds, and giving me a semi-clear idea of what was going on. The planet was absolutely beautiful and had nice alien touches - far better than any away mission on any of the earlier TV series . The planet-side scenes had a very heavy TOS vibe, as others noted. The characterization was good, the dialogue was more natural, and the Klingon scenes were not totally boring.

The bad: As was mentioned upthread, there wasn't much of a plot to speak of here. The episode really relied to a great degree upon the very special special effects to hold our interest, because so little was really happening planetside. And the Klingon scenes continue to frustrate, because there's lots of things which look like plot development, but are left ambiguous enough that nothing ever gets nailed down (whether or not Cornwell is actually dead being the most notable example).

The series as a whole: I think, as episodes of Discovery go, this might end up being as smart and well executed as they come. But it still seems remarkably shallow to me. I mean in the sense that if you strip back the character development, the whiz-bang visuals, and the overall plot arc, I just don't really see any overriding theme here. Not every Trek episode needs to be a "message" episode, but I'm not sure we've seen a single one from Discovery yet, and I'm really mourning their absence.

This episode tried my patience.

I read some time back that the next episode will end a story arc and this was the reason it was chosen as the conclusion of the fall season.
