News Star Trek: Discovery – Adhering To Canon

As for food synthesisers, who is to say there were no matter synthesisers when transporters already existed? Has it ever been stated that there was no precursor to replicators just because we never saw them?
Food Synthesizers are an outgrowth of protein re-sequencer technology, so yea they didn't exist.

Nope, the Type 7 only had an impulse drive.
Oh please the 'type' of Impuse drigve was NEVER stated on screen. here's what we SAW in TOS - "Metamorphosis":

[Shuttlecraft]
(Enterprise shuttlecraft NCC1701/7 is being piloted by Kirk, assisted by Spock. McCoy is tending to a lady in a green dress and headscarf.)
SPOCK: We have reached projected point three, Captain. Adjust to new course two oh one mark one five.
KIRK: Thank you, Mister Spock.
MCCOY: (offering a drink) Jim.
KIRK: How is she, Doc?
MCCOY: No change.
NANCY: Small thanks to the Starfleet.
MCCOY: Now really, Commissioner, you can't blame the Starfleet.
NANCY: I should've received the proper inoculations ahead of time.
MCCOY: Sakuro's disease is extremely rare. The chances of anyone contracting it are literally billions to one.
NANCY: I was sent to Epsilon Canaris Three to prevent a war, Doctor. Thanks to the inefficiency of the medical branch of the Starfleet, I've been forced to leave before my job was done.
KIRK: Commissioner, I can assure you that once we reach the Enterprise, with its medical facilities, we'll have you back to your job in time for you to prevent that war.
NANCY: How soon will we rendezvous with that ship of yours, Captain?
KIRK: In exactly four hours, twenty one minutes, Commissioner.
SPOCK: Captain.
KIRK: Yes?
SPOCK: Will you check your automatic scanner, please?
KIRK: That's odd. I've never seen anything like that before.
SPOCK: Nor have I.
(They lower the central shutter to view the approaching swirly flashing thing.)
SPOCK: Heading directly toward us at warp speed.
KIRK: Staying right with us. Sensor readings, Mister Spock.
SPOCK: Vaguely like a cloud of ionised hydrogen, but with strong erratic electrical impulses.
(Sounds of electrical shorts. The lights flicker.)
KIRK: We've got it.
SPOCK: Helm does not answer, Captain.
KIRK: Neither do the pods. Communications are dead. Building overload. Cut all power relays.
SPOCK: Cut, Captain.
NANCY: What's happening? I demand to know.
KIRK: You already know as much as we do, Miss Hedford. Whatever that thing is outside, it's yanked us off course from the Enterprise.
SPOCK: Now on course nine eight mark one two, heading directly toward Gamma Canaris region.
MCCOY: Jim, we've got to get Miss Hedford to the Enterprise. Her condition.
KIRK: I know, Bones, but there's nothing I can do about it.
NANCY: I insist you make your scheduled rendezvous with the Enterprise.
KIRK: Miss Hedford, we'll do what we can, when we can. At the moment, we're helpless. You might as well sit back and enjoy the ride.
Bottom Line:
TOS shuttles had Matter-Anti-Matter Warp Pods (see the video) and were capable of Warp Speed.

Source? Because "Menagerie" doesn't make much sense unless the shuttle they're chasing the Enterprise in can warp.
Transcript
[Bridge]

HANSEN: Sir, scanners report an object following us, about the size of a starbase shuttlecraft. Shall we reverse helm?
SPOCK: Take no action, Mister Hansen.
HANSEN: But at our speed, they'll never catch us. In case they want to reach us
SPOCK: You have your orders, Mister Hansen. We'll make no contact.

[Shuttlecraft]

MENDEZ: Starbase Shuttlecraft one to Enterprise. Come in, please. Enterprise, Commodore Mendez and Captain Kirk. If you read me, you are ordered to reply. Repeating it on all emergency frequencies, Jim.
KIRK: Spock is headed for Talos Four, all right.
MENDEZ: Pulling ahead of us fast. Fuel is down to sixty three point three. If we turn back now, we've just got barely enough to get us back to the base.
KIRK: Shuttlecraft to Enterprise, come in. Shuttlecraft to Enterprise, come in. Enterprise, come in!

[Bridge]

COMPUTER: Library computer.
SPOCK: Lock on to sensors. Measure object now following the Enterprise.
COMPUTER: Computed. Object is a Class F shuttlecraft. Duranium metal shell, ion engine power
SPOCK: Stop. How long before shuttlecraft's fuel supply forces return to starbase?
COMPUTER: Computed. Shuttlecraft is already past point of safe return.

[Shuttlecraft]

MENDEZ: We coast.
KIRK: Blast you any way. You had no right to come along.
MENDEZ: RHIP, Captain. Rank hath its privileges.
KIRK: Two hours of oxygen left.
MENDEZ: Wonderful.
KIRK: Part of me is hoping the Enterprise won't come back for us. We step on that deck, Spock is finished. Court-martialed, disgraced.
MENDEZ: He's dead if he makes it to Talos Four. Why would he want to get Pike there? The command reports stated Talos contained absolutely no practical benefits to mankind.
KIRK: Spock would have some logical reason for going there.
MENDEZ: Maybe. Maybe he's just gone mad.

[Bridge]

MCCOY: I keep wondering who might be after us in a shuttlecraft and I keep coming up with the same answers, but I can't be right, can l, Mister Spock.
SPOCK: Computer control. Lock on to shuttlecraft following us.
COMPUTER: Locked on. Tractor beam ready.
SPOCK: Go to tape Abel Seven Baker. Execute instructions.
MCCOY: Is it the captain, Mister Spock?
HANSEN: Sir, the engines are reversing. She's brought herself to a dead stop.
Be odd to chase a starship in a shuttle if it can't achive warp.

So what bits of canon did we have violated this week?

I caught the Warp capable shuttles and the "Matter" synthesizer. (Supposed to be just food.)

Site to site transporter seems to common

The Menagerie, Kirk and the Admirals shuttle followed the Enterprise at warp until they were in danger of running out of fuel chasing her, forcing Spock to drop by to sublight long enough to save them.

The Galileo Seven, the Quasar held mulitple planetary systems, no shuttle at impulse would have had that episode take place in anything less than decades. They all had warp, to get about the lightyears of the "effect" in hours.

And that's just two I can think of right now.

And in TOS - "Patterns of Force" they have Doctor McCoy Bean down in a full German WWII Military Uniform:

[Cloakroom]
(In amongst the hangars full of uniforms, Spock fiddles with his home-made communicator.)

SPOCK: It may not have the range it had. In fact, it may not work at all.

KIRK: Think positively, Spock.

SPOCK: Spock to Enterprise. Spock to Enterprise. Come in, Enterprise.

UHURA [OC]: Enterprise. Lieutenant Uhura.

KIRK: Captain here. Put McCoy on.

UHURA [OC]: Yes, sir. Captain, we're not reading you well. You're nine points into the low-frequency band.

KIRK: We've having difficulty. Patch historical computer into uniform section. I want McCoy outfitted as a Gestapo doctor Nazi Germany, old Earth date 1944. Make him a colonel.

UHURA [OC]: Yes, sir.
^^^
What - is the ship large enough that the Ship's Quartermaster has historically accurate German WWII military uniforms just lying around. The uniform was CLEARLY synthesized BY the Ship's Computer..Hell, the Computer even made a mistake:
SPOCK: If there's going to be a delay in transporting the doctor, I suggest we cancel our

KIRK: Kirk to Enterprise. What's happening up there?

[Bridge]

UHURA: Doctor McCoy is having difficulty with that uniform, sir.

[Cloakroom]

KIRK: Send him down naked if you have to. Kirk out.
(McCoy is beamed down still trying to put a boot on.)

DARAS: It's true. I only half-believed what you said.

MCCOY: Stupid computer made a mistake in the measurements. The right boot's too tight.

SPOCK: There is a logical way to proceed, Doctor. Point your toe, apply equal pressure to either side of the boot, and push. We have no time for emotionalism.
^^^
So yes, it's fairly obvious that in the TOS 23rd century era - there was a device that could synthesize a Ship's Uniform. :)

I caught the Warp capable shuttles and the "Matter" synthesizer. (Supposed to be just food.)

The "food" synthesizers in TOS did a good job at producing cups, plates, and silverware as well. So, unless those were edible, I think they've always been matter synthesizers.

Kirk said in Catspaw that the Enterprise could produce (in a manner that sounds like 3D printing now) literal tons of precious gemstones, brilliantly cut, ready to go, in hours.

That needs atomic level production means, and to make that amount (even diamonds aren't that heavy) in less than a day means some serious production capacity.

And the food was produced hot anywhere on the ship at a request, sequencers aren't replicators but they'll get smaller jobs like food and clothes done.

The bowls and stuff were already in the dispenser, the food was synthesized onto them.

Not to mention the construction of a series of satellites in Operation Annihilate! in less than a day. The TOS Enterprise could build tons of material in hours when she wanted.

And muskets in A Private Little War

From TOS onwards all shuttles had warp nacelles so while we almost never saw them at warp the technology was there and, seriously, think of all those TNG and Voyager episodes where the crew takes a shuttle on leave and goes long distances. It'd take years to get anywhere without it, so I don't see it as out of canon.

As for food synthesisers, who is to say there were no matter synthesisers when transporters already existed? Has it ever been stated that there was no precursor to replicators just because we never saw them?

If the shuttle they gave Scotty didn't have warp, they would basically be stranding him to die again.

The had warp shuttles and impulse only shuttles in TNG, but I believe TOS shuttles were at least intended to fly only at sublight. I don't remember if it was explicitly stated.

It makes sense through. The Warp engine on Enterprise and TOS was highly volatile, and needed great care and expertise to operate. And remember Scotty just COULD NOT wrap his brain around a warp engine the size of walnut:lol:
And Scotty was basically an engineering genius who spent all his free time pooring over technical manuals. Could he conceive of a warp engine the size of a V6 3.5L engine? Maybe?

Either way, the TOS shuttle was short range with a VERY limited fuel supply. It had a fuel supply akin to a jet fighter.

Which is at least once. Was it explicitly stated they had warp?

The Menagerie (warp chase), The Galileo Seven (multiple solar systems, lightyears from the Enterprise for her to see something that massive as so far out), other shuttles caught up to or left the Enterprise when lightyears from a home base.
