Star Trek: Crossroad (#71) by Barbara Hambly (1994)

I don't even remember Crossroad. But I've read Ishmael a number of times; I've always found it to be a lot of fun.

Mr. Bennett: did Ishmael also get alluded to in a DTI opus? I don't recall.

I'm not fond of Hambly's SW novels, though. Particularly Planet of Twilight. I found the whole "droch" premise a bit nauseating.

No. That's not one of the books I count in my personal continuity. It posited some things about Klingon history (the Karsid conquest) that aren't compatible with what we now know from canon. And it had other credibility issues as well, including all the in-joke appearances by characters from other franchises.

It's been twenty years since I read this bit I seem to remember really enjoying it.

From recollection the yagghorth is an attempt to provide an truly alien threat - if you encountered one, your options were to run or die...

In the real world, they are intended to prove a dark Lovecraft type threat... I guess the author was a fan?

I thought the concept of the yaggorth was really interesting and menacing. Since it was sort of a Mirror universe I thought they might introduce a pirate version of Kirk from the future. While I'm sort of glad they didn't as it wouldn't have made sense but I'm also disappointed too.
