I don't think allowing THIS one set of graphic novels to be canon would upset the grand order of things in any meaningful, long-lasting way. We got almost no backstory to the new movie save for Old Spock's meld with young Kirk on Delta Vega, and that sequence lasted all of...what? One minute and some change? Paramount doesnt canonize books and most other non-screen materials for good reasons but in this case they should make an exception because of the stunning lack of background and buildup to the new movie's plot.
