Star Trek Countdown #2 (Spoilers)

fleetcaptain

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I checked about an hour or so ago on here to see if anyone had received or picked up their issue yet and noticed that there was nothing posted. So I just picked mine up about half an hour ago and well I'm really impressed.
Now I see why there hasn't been much mention about what will pop up in this miniseries tie in to the movie. I was really surprised what was said in this issue.
I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, since I haven't really read it myself yet. All I have to say, is anyone that has speculated about a certain someone will see that well that speculation has ended up happening. Got an idea what I mean? Well I'm sure everyone will figure it out. Just to give you an hint, there was artwork posted up a week or so ago, had Data and Spock in the ready room. Now I saw why there was no word bubbles in that page.Picard does make an appearence in this issue finally, looking no older. LOL.
Now I can't wait for the next 2 issues to come out for sure.
I was also impressed by the artwork. I'm an artist myself and have been figured a way how to do some of the characters from the various series.

Re: Star Trek Countdown #2

The reveal on Data was no surprise to me, fans here posted their theories last month, which were dead on.

That said, I LOVED the data on Data.

Re: Star Trek Countdown #2

I am finding this series to be nothing compared to what the Trek authors have created for the post-nemesis arc. Bringing Data back is a cheap stunt. The trek novels have been smart enough not to fall for such an easy gimmick. Plus, I cannot see the Vulcans reverting to the ENT style Vulcans and not being willing to help the Romulans, especially to save billions of lives. This is one of the things that I have been worried about with the new movie; this lack of care with the material that has come before. I could never see Picard becoming an ambassador after what he and Kirk shared in Generations. Picard, like Kirk, is a captain. The only thing that I am really enjoying so far are the holographic controls on the Enterprise, it is a good leap forward in technology.

Re: Star Trek Countdown #2

Yeah, I'm feeling the same way. I hate to say it be it's sort of making me look forward to the movie less and I wasn't all that excited about it to begin with.

Re: Star Trek Countdown #2

^^Well, keep in mind that even Roberto Orci, who co-plotted the comic, has said it isn't necessarily canonical. And though he and Kurtzman plotted it, someone else actually scripted it. So one probably can't judge the movie on the basis of the comic.

I can't say I care - those who prefer the book version get the book version, those who want to see a Captain Data get a Captain Data. Everyone is a winner.

Pretty disappointing all around. It displays an almost-Gold Key-level disregard for science.
A supernova that imperils the entire UNIVERSE?

Really.

Did you read Countdown #1 ?

Spock, while speaking to the Romulan senate did say this is not an ordinary event.
And even Romulan Senators dismissed him wondering how a supernova could be such a threat. :

Re: Star Trek Countdown #2

My thoughts:

Are we positive that was Romulus in the final shot? It certainly appears to be, based on Nero's reaction, but then again they merely said they'd entered "Romulan space" which seemed like odd wording.

Either way, my prediction is that Nero's wife will have been safely evacuated on a Vulcan ship or something, but Nero won't know this and will start firing away on the Vulcan ships in retaliation, killing her in the process and driving him even further into rage/villainy.

Re: Star Trek Countdown #2

I'll be getting this when it comes out in TPB at the end of April and am pretty much taking it what it is, a tie-in to a major motion picture that may or may not have continuity. The Data reveal was pretty much what I had anticipated and mentioned by myself and many others in the first issue thread. Seeing Picard again was kind of cool...and the new uniforms are growing on me. Looking forward to see how this all ends...and leads into Star Trek.

Re: Star Trek Countdown #2

Can someone post how Data survived post-Nemesis? I am not planning on reading this.

I am not really judging the movie, completely, but it is their influence on this does leave me a little worried. Just feel like going back to the TOS time is not the best move. Would much rather have seen the beginning of the Federation. That time period lends itself more to the sexy and rambunctious Trek that Abrams is going for. ENT is much better suited to this kind of story. But that is just my feeling.

Having Data back is really just a bad choice creatively and not at all needed, there are plenty of other characters better suited for the Captain of the Enterprise without resorting to the copout. I mean, if they are going to ignore things, allow Worf to be captain. If you had not had Data as captain and just allowed Picard to still be in command, the story would have been so much better. Having Data back just seems like a silly fanboy thing, in the worst kid of way.

Again, Kudos to the Trek novel writers for steering the 24th century in a much better direction.

The B4 transplantation from Nemesis took. Not all that original.
Yeah, that was the least-creative possibility.

It is too bad too, because it seems like, if you are going to have Picard off being an ambassador, then why not just give it to Riker (if you want to do your own thing).

Why would Riker go back to the stuffy old Enterprise when he already has the coolest job in Starfleet commanding Titan? :D

It is just something that is as silly, creatively as having Data as captain.

Yeah, I did read #1.

And "Galaxy" is not remotely on the same order of magnitude as "Universe." Saying a single supernova threatens the entire galaxy is preposterous enough (unless it was something like the entire core of the galaxy exploding -- and that would take tens of thousands of years to cause harm to our local space.) But a supernova threat to the entire UNIVERSE simply displays a shocking ignorance of real science.

Maybe they got the word wrong when they had Spock state that the entire universe was threatened... but it's a mistake someone should have caught and corrected.

I'm sure CLB could back me up on this...
