Poll STAR TREK CONTINUES: "To Boldly Go (Parts I & II)" - Grading & Discussion Thread

I've actually maintained quite often that the pilot episode is actually the finale of an unseen season. The impact of losing two main cast, beloved characters in Kelso and Mitchell, and maybe a slight retcon giving Dehner a bigger previous role, can change the perceived impact of the events of the pilot immensely. I would love a fan series to have tackled a set of episodes with Spock as a new arrival, more of an outsider; a main cast that included Lee, the Doctor, Gary, Kirk Dehner and maybe Sulu, Smith and Scotty.

I know I'm late to the party, but I'm finally watching the last few episodes of STC. While I find "To Boldly Go" to be quite fun so far, I feel that it calls back too much to previous elements and events of TOS in a way that an actual episode wouldn't have, if there had actually been a fourth season. But in this way it actually feels very much like reading one of the older Pocket Books TOS novels. YMMV.

I would compare the callbacks in this to, say, All Good Things. Which I'm sure was the intent.

When were ships not obliterated so easily? During TOS, the Constellation was irrevocably wrecked (then destroyed), then, there's the Intrepid, Exeter (abandoned, so its effectively lost), the Defiant (lost in Tholian space) and lets not forget the ships damaged in "The Ultimate Computer." Constitution Class ships were out on the frontier--had greater responsibilities, so it makes sense that they would face greater dangers.

The Constellation was damaged by something which was extraordinary and possibly from another Galaxy. The Intrepid was again perished by a phenomena which was out of the Starship Class' reaches, and The Ultimate Computer those ships were engineered for a simulation and not ready for a full on attack. But from what I'd seen and understand of these spacecrafts including the Defiant could take a pounding because they're meant for deep space exploration where the crew needed to handle their business on their own. TOS capitalized on that make up.

The Ultimate Computer showed that Constitution class ships could not withstand phasers on full power from one of their own. In the remastered version, we see one of the ships glowing blue when hit implying that even though the hull didn't look damaged, the interior was flooded with phaser energy, killing everyone.

For all we know, the energy warped every bulkhead and plate on the ship, rendering the ship totally useless.

TNG, a Miranda class can be obliterated by one torpedo. DSC, even a Crossfield can be taken out entirely by two torpedoes.

Starships in the Prime universe are fragile as eggs once their shields go down, at least the 23rd century ones.

As we know Spock has been aboard under Pike for years by this point, it might work better to have Kirk being the new captain bringing his own command crew along, and finding Spock and maybe Dehner already in residence.
