Star Trek Continues, Episode 4...

STC has passed one important test for me: attaining a sense of anticipation.

I look forward to what they'll do next. I haven't felt like that for a science fiction series since Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis. And those paled to my sense of anticipation watching Babylon 5 which was much like how I remember feeling when I first discovered Star Trek way back in the day.

"Pilgrim Of Eternity" was decent. I recall being juiced by how authentic it felt overall and the different casting wasn't much of a distraction. "Lolani" blew me away. Everything felt right in that this seemed so much like something we could have seen on TOS. And the cast was even less of a distraction. "Fairest Of Them All" was so much fun. Not in a "Trouble With Tribbles" kind of way, but in how the whole thing was done. And the cast was pretty much spot on.

Each episode STC has brought the familiar along with something new to the table that fits right in. For me they are definitely 3 for 3. And even though there are things I would like to see I am eager to see Episodes 4 and 5.

I read somewhere that Sylvia Anderson suggested that there was some technical reason the females donned the purple wigs when stationed on the moon. The girls never wore them on Earth.

IIRC the purple hair was an anti-static wig. Men did not need them because their hair was short.

Star Trek Continues is the first fan effort I have truly enjoyed. Others have some great moments and ideas (Of Gods & Men), but the creators of this series have really captured the heart of what made TOS Trek special for me.

I'm sure there's no doubt who my favorite character has been. Lou just nails it and that dialogue at the dinner scene was right up there with the best of them. What a memorable character.

I'm sure there's no doubt who my favorite character has been. Lou just nails it and that dialogue at the dinner scene was right up there with the best of them. What a memorable character.

I think we have a fair number of Kirk- and Spock-based usernames. Those probably count.

Re UFO the wigs were a style thing. Sylvia Anderson said she felt wigs might be part of a uniform. They had no function other than being the "hat" for those silver outfits.

As to fidelity to TOS (or whatever) most fanfilms operate under the modus operandi "We will stay true to the show... until we don't".

I would say it's a matter of degree. It's near impossible to recreate the exact sensibility of TOS because things are being produced with a 2014 perspective rather than a 1966-69 perspective. Everyone will deviate to some degree or other.

But I think we can say STC has deviated far less than anyone else.

Lolani is such a great name - it almost sounds Hawaiian. Elise McKenna - an avatar of Jane Seymour from "Somewhere in Time"?. Cmdre. Gray, Wilma Deering in a jumpsuit. I hear that they are bringing in more guest stars of sci-fi fame for more potentially great characters.

Well that should be obvious. If there's one advantage Vic Mignona has over all the other fan film productions, it's that for years since becoming an anime voiceover celebrity he's been a regular on the comic con circuit and has had quite an opportunity to garnish his contact book with his fellow travellers' FBs. I keep expecting him to one day cast either Tom Savini, Stan Lee or famous wrestlers in smallish parts (joke there, STC warriors).

I don't expect they'll one day feature Jennifer Lawrence or Bill Murray in an episode, but if they keep stunt-casting as shrewdly as they have, they'll keep their fans' interest for a good long while...

Some of the sci-fi guests were little known (if at all) to me and I doubt I'm alone in that. Lou Ferrigno and Erin Gray I both knew of, but I was not a fan of Buck Rogers or a regular watcher of The Hulk. So for me these were simply two known and talented guest performers that added a little extra lustre to the production. Ferrigno was wonderful particularly as it struck me as against his type as the Hulk. And Erin Gray gave fans something we had long wanted to have seen on TOS.
