Star Trek Continues, Episode 4...

Okay, it's time to stop unnecessarily poking the bear where Axanar supporters are concerned. And if someone thinks they're being trolled, I suggest PMing the moderator instead of hurling the term "trolling" around, as nothing good ever comes of that.

Seriously.

They are halfway to their initial goal in day 2 of a 30 day stretch. if things are steady, I think they will get all they are asking for, engineering, and planet sets and possibly more episodes beyond the 2 included in the initial goal. I hope we'll get Episodes 7 and 8 out of this Kickstarter. It would be nice to have some major corps donate (like Paramount or CBS).. :).

I was joking , but I briefly looked over the kickstarter rules and didn't see any restrictions on corporate donations. Probably won't happen, but STC isn't profiting from it and may actually add to the marketing of "Trek".

Similarly, Starship Valiant launched their GoFundMe the other day and are only asking for a comparatively small amount ($5,000.00) to produce their next episode and as of right now have raised $1,026.00.

From where I'm sitting, I guess it's still a foregone conclusion that Continues will meet its goal. The market for fan films to collect donations from fans via fundraisers hasn't bottomed out yet, so that's a good thing. But, even if for some reason this fundraiser doesn't meet its goal, I somehow doubt it will deter Vic and company from producing another show.

On the flipside, it'd be a shame if Valiant didn't get the chance to show us more of what they can do, especially given that they are asking for so much less for their fundraising and especially after seeing how much money fans are willing to donate to other projects. They've still got time though and they've made huge progress in the three days the fundraiser has been up. I'm crossing my fingers for both projects!

Apparently the word is out that Canadian SF writer Robert J. Sawyer has gotten a bit part in STC Ep. 4.

I know Robert is a huge TOS fan and it was a huge inspiration for him as he became a proven SF writer so he must feel like a kid at Christmas over this.

. . .

I saw the first episode, and it looks very good. Very story-driven which I like. I'll probably donate.

That would be great if he actually authored or contributed to the story.

I mentioned the same on his FB page, but I'm not sure of the legalities involved. No one associated with a fan production can profit monetarily from it. We know we are seeing professional actors involved and I assume they are donating their time for the enjoyment of it. I imagine the same would apply to a professional writer who would be donating his ideas and time without monetary compensation.

I don't know who is or is not getting paid for their work on any given project. However, I will say that it IS possible for to free work to happen since SAG/AFTRA has special rules for "new media" projects that allow it, albeit with a mountain of paperwork.

Sure it sounds fun, but think about the ramifications.... It would destroy their standing regarding the property.

You're talking about Paramount / CBS? Yep, there will be a long line banging at the door and possible litigation from other parties who feel they were passed over.

No, I'm thinking more of the precedent it sets when a rights-holder financially supports a fan production - it could be argued it implicitly abrogates some of their IP rights.

They wouldn't care about other fan films queuing up, they could squash that line like a bug. It's what it would mean for all fan films.

Doug Drexler has posted an image on his FB page that is an image from the upcoming Ep. 4.

And it's of the Enterprise in orbit of a planet. :D
