Star Trek comics- are there any good ones?

I looked at John Byrne's current one briefly, and *UGGHH*, he's inking himself, never a good idea for Mr. Bryne. In fact, I couldn't even look at too many pages. He's an amazing penciler, but if he's gonna finish it as well, then IMO he should just write it & let another artist render it.:shifty:

In the 90s Marvel did a series called Early Voyages, set during Chris Pike's tenure as captain of the Enterprise, those were pretty cool.

There's a whole rash of them out lately, and for the most part I'm enjoying them.

And yeah, I agree about Byrne - he needs Terry Austin.

For my money, any of the DC Comics TOS run from the late 80s/early 90s is fantastic, especially the early issues written by Peter David and Howard Weinstein. Editor Bob Greenberger put together fantastic creative teams on this book, and almost every issue was a winner (and I'm not just saying that 'cause Bob printed one of my letters in the letter column, way back when :p).

Those were actually the only ones I ever remember reading.

As I recall, they were pretty damn awesome.

OK if that works better. I like Byrne's art no matter who inks it. Nor do I care about Byrne's personal opinions.:vulcan:

As for current comics, IDW Publishing is producing many mini-series that can then be collected into trade paperbacks and sold in Borders and Barnes & Noble as well as comic book specialty shops.:borg:

Since their primary license is for Classic Trek and The Next Generation, there's quite a bit of material available.:klingon:

As far as my favorites go, the best Classic Trek series were Klingons: Blood Will Tell as well as Star Trek: Year 4, The Enterprise Experiment brought to life by Dorothy Fontana and Trek super-artist Gordon Purcell.:bolian:

I wish I could say that I enjoy the Next Generation issues as much as Classic Trek, but I've found them to be poorly written and badly drawn ... until ST:TNG: The Last Generation series drawn by Purcell, came along. That's, as they say, fascinating.:cardie:

If you don't like Byrne, there are plenty of series to ignore: Star Trek: Assignment Earth (with Gary Seven and his cat). He's also done a few stories based on his interpretations of the Romulans, which comes by way of Caligula.:rommie:

And the company's producing an Omnibus of other alreadly printed material, such as Marvel's Early Voyages compilation (with Pike and Number One) and an upcoming tome featuring Malibu Comics' Deep Space Nine series.:alienblush:

Pick out the ones you like, probably in trade paperback form since you can get them all at once with no running from one comic book store to the next.:techman:

And above all, live long and prosper!:)

Star Trek Early Voyages from marvel comics was really good unlike a lot of tie in comics the title wasn't marred by horrible artwork. I heard IDW was reprinting Early Voyage in omnibus format so they should be easy to acquire. Can anyone recommend any good Deep Space Nine comics?

They are easy and fun to collect, but for their reading merit and Trek-believability, they are kind of lacking, IMO.

I'm also going to throw my vote in for the Early Voyages comic, and add Starfleet Academy as well. The first few issues felt rather hokey, but it picked up very quickly after that. Those two were the stand out hits of Marvel's '90s comics.

More recent ones I enjoyed were Forgiveness and Gorn War, though I'll admit the art in those may have grabbed me more than the story.

Last week, IDW put out an omnibus of Marvel's Early Voyages series. It went all the way to issue 17, the last one and a cliffhanger never resolved.:vulcan:

I unerstand that before long, IDW will have a DS9 omnibus from the series by Malibu Comics which had such a great coloring system that Marvel bought it and cancelled all Malibu titles.:klingon:

The only TNG one I can remember featured a chess game between Q and Trelane where they transported Jean-Luc Picard to Kirk's Enterprise and James T. Kirk to Picard's newly launched Enterprise-E. I only remember them because the TOS Enterprise takes out a Vor'Cha Class Battle Crusier and the Enterprise-E gets its ass kicked by a D-7 Class Battle Cruiser.

I like the current Byrne series "Crew," where the main character is Number One before her Enterprise days, and he goes out of his way to draw attention to never calling her by name (since she doesn't have one).

Have to agree on Byrne's inks - he definitely needs Terry Austin, or even Dan Green. I love his pencils, though, and I've been pretty happy with both Crew and Assignment:Earth. He can make a great "scope" image (I still think one of his best works is StarLord, written by Chris Claremont - the only comic I remember that topped Star Wars for visual impact, and it would be great to see him draw Trek with that same sense of wonder and awe.), especially if the inks are clean.
