Star Trek: CAPTAIN PIKE

From the 'Captain Pike' Facebook page:
CAPTAIN PIKE UPDATES: Sorry we haven't been posting much lately we've been focusing on our work and getting some scenes to you soon. Unlike many other Productions, we make no money on our film and have to work on other projects to pay the bills which is why there hasn't been a ton of time to post.

Many of our scenes are in VFX being worked on. As soon as that is completed we will have something to show you!

Wow... I feel like I've been in suspended animation and just woke up. The production quality and acting talent appearing in these fan fiction episodes is stunning, really impressive. And it's just mind blowing how some actors from commercial productions are showing up too!

Some of them have areas for growth and improvement with the writing, though.

Was just doing some reading on Captain Pike.........their Indiegogo page says " We will start shooting in September in L.A. Then again in January we will continue the rest of our shoot. We have talked with Alec Peters (Axanar) and are planning on shooting on his sets." Did that happen and if not where did they shoot?

This project should win or fail on its own merits. Plus, what Axanar sets?
That's what raised my eyebrows..........You mean the "unfinished sets" per the motion to dismiss? Wonder what he rents those babies out for, and rent of the studio/warehouse.............SMH.

Meh.²

Another stand and talk on a green screen set shot in the blandest manner imaginable.

Odd choice for a first scene. Brief too. Would like to see more and know more about what they are doing.

The scene is blah. I kept asking myself, "what's the point?"

The dialogue is awkward all around, forcing some exposition in between lines that don't feel naturalistic.

Pike doesn't express himself like Pike from the Cage, and Spock sounds more like TOS Spock rather than Cage Spock (I doubt very much Cage Spock would have adressed his Captain as ''Chris''). Nice production value is the best thing I can say for now.

Its always tough when a new actor steps into a well established role. I like the production values and want to see more. I agree with the "Chris" comment. It seems out of place. Except, if this is supposed to take place long after the cage. They would have had to become friends if Spock was going to risk death later in TOS for him.

Why is Pike wearing a field jacket on the Enterprise?

It was a minute of material. Tough to make any type of honest stab at what the quality of the overall film will be like. Though I wish they'd move away from the stand and talk. Or is that a limitation of shooting on a green screen?

Unless you see the scene in the full context of the film, a nitpick of the details seems premature (IE perhaps they just returned from a surface mission - who knows?) As to Captain Pike and Mr. Spock not being like they were in The Cage - if I'm not mistaken, this story takes place after the events in 'The Cage' - so I don't have an issue with him being 'mote TOS-like' as in 'The Cage' Vulcan's were not written as devoid of emotion - but due to changes GR made in the concept, that's what Vulcans became.

As for 'Spock would never refer to Pike as 'Chris' - please, Spock did so in "The Menagerie" and MANY TIMES in TOS he referred to Kirk as 'Jim'; so it seems established that if Spock has a close friendship with the Captain, he'll use that Captain's first name; and the Pike character didn't seem to mind. Also given Spock's actions 10-12 years later, one could assume he and Pike were close enough that Spock was willing to risk his career for Pike - so nothing it that scene made me feel what was written for either character was 'out of character'.

Agaim, hard to judge something by a 1 minute scene; but it's enough that I'd be interested in seeing the finished product if they're able to complete it. YMMV.

I thought about that. Either Spock changes very quickly or was off duty while Pike was off the ship. Neither seem likely to me. Though I do wonder why the window of the NCC-1701 looks like a porthole from the NX-01?
