Spoilers Star Trek Beyond

Commodore
Commodore
Minor spoilers ahead.

I saw the movie on Saturday morning. While I'm sure this wasn't a shout out of any kind to Voyager (like Commodore Paris) I couldn't help but think about Voyager as Kirk walked around the corridors, in the beginning of the movie, addressing the strain of being in Deep Space for three years. The sameness of everything, the relationships forming and breaking up...how their mission had become routine. I like Voyager but apart from the episode Night and maybe a little bit with Tom's behavior in Vis a Vis (I can't think of any other so feel free to add to the list) we don't see a lot of this we should have seen more. There was the mention of the mission being 'episodic' but that could apply to any of the series except DS9.

So did this cross anyone else's mind? Just me? Will you think about it now when you see it again simply because I brought it up? ;)

I don't have any thoughts on this. I just thought that spoiler tag really is the devil on one's shoulder that says 'you know you want to click me'.

... Indeed! In the VERY deed ...

Other than the Commodore Paris reference, I really didn't channel Voyager during the movie.

As for Voyager not addressing the mission fatigue during its run, I would simply point to (nearly?) every episode of season 5, a season I frequently describe as Voyager's "journey through the dark night of its soul".

The plot kinda reminded me of "Basics" in as much as they're stranded on a hostile planet. The Commodore Paris reference was cool.

And did anyone else pick up on the Tuvix reference when McCoy is first beamed to the Franklin?

I forgot about that one. I'm going to have to listen for that the next time around.

He explained to McCoy that he beamed them up separately to prevent "splicing".

I don't know if that was a "Tuvix" reference or simply a reference to McCoy's long held fear of transporters.

why are we assuming it was some sort of parallel or shout out? How about rehashing old ideas because they don't have any new ones? Recycling like they do their props, clothing, and actors.

It could have been a tongue in cheek reference to Tuvix. Especially with the comment McCoy made after, something to the effect that it'd be horrible or something. If Pegg follows any of the fan boards, such as this, he'd know what a point of consternation it is.

It could also be a reference to the transporter malfunction in TMP where the Admiral and his assistant were spliced together and died horrible deaths.

I caught the Commodore Paris line, which I thought was nice of VOY and fits that Tom's dad so well, if his family was a long line of Starfleet officers.

The transporter bit I took as a tongue in cheek nod to "Tuvis" "The Enemy Within" as well as playing McCoy's fear of the transporter.

I like Shoreh Aghdashloo anyway, so hearing her soothing voice announce that she was Commodore Paris did make me smile. My friend who was with me loved VOY when she was younger and she was excited. :)

I caught the splicing reference and thought of Tuvix straight away but I never realised Commodore Paris was supposed to be an ancestor of Tom Paris! I love that actress. Her voice is amazing. I hope to see her again in NuTrek.

I love that there were nods to all the shows in the franchise. Voyager and Enterprise in particular have had a reputation for being overlooked, so it was nice to see them getting a nod or two. :)

I've long thought that Voyager's concept in a lot of ways was a back-to-basics for the franchise.... a self-conscious attempt to get back to some of the isolation, seat of the pants of TOS. I agree it often didn't capitalize on that potential, but the episodes which did are often among the best.
