Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

The matinee I saw this morning was nearly packed full, something of an oddity.
Personally, I loved the first half of the movie. The destruction of the Enterprise came out of Charles Stross. The resolution felt a bit Doctor Who. My son, OTOH, loved the ending. When we left he was grinning from ear to ear. I never thought he would like a Trek movie this much.

If I had ANY complaint at all, it is with
Krall. As a villain, he's not really all that memorable. nor did he have any real connection with Kirk. And Kirk, who had his ship totally destroyed and many of his people killed by Krall, didn't have the "blood in his eye" I would have expected.
Other than that small thing, I loved every bit of it.

The
destruction of Enterprise actually HURT. Remember that feeling in 1984 when Harve Bennett scuttled the Enterprise? This was worse. It was like watching a favorite character being disemboweled. I felt SAD! Seeing the nacelles ripped away
was actually shocking. That's how into this movie I was.

The entire cast was exceptional and it really felt like the right mix of the templates for the classic series and the modern summer blockbuster. No lens flare, no pillaging of other Trek movies for plots, but with plenty of references and dozens of callbacks to films and episodes from all across the franchise. An utterly satisfying Trek movie on nearly every level. I'm looking forward to the inevitable release of the complete Michael Giacchino score. There were some beautiful passages, especially at the intro of Yorktown.

As a space adventure and one with heart, Beyond outclasses the last Star Wars movie by many a mile.
While I love Beyond, I'm not sure I can agree with that. The Force Awakens felt better on a lot of levels.

That's actually a good point about Kirk under the circumstances.

The plot contrivances and poorly developed characters in The Force Awakens definitely put it below Star Trek Beyond for me.

I had noticed this during my first viewing and my second almost reinforced my perception of a particular event...
...when Kirk activated the thrusters on the saucer, causing it to flip over and as it does, it takes out Kalara. I felt like this was the Enterprise getting revenge on her for basically being responsible for her destruction.

Having always felt like the ship was just a much a member of the cast as the actors, I liked the notion even if it wasn't intentional.

I'm happy with that. Never occurred to me.

If he had been out for blood people would say he didn't learn his lesson in STID. I thought it was fitting the way he reacted. All that mattered after the fact was
his crew, which showed how much he has matured.
Edit: Went ahead and put spoiler tags on that though it is really not a spoiler.

I suppose, but I would've liked to have seen him at least battle his emotions at the loss, though. The way it was it was a little too much like putting a plot point behind him, forgetting it, and moving on to the next one.

I thought those last moments of him standing on the bridge while he watched her go down showed him fighting his emotions. Pine did a great job showing how much it was hurting Kirk to lose the Enterprise that way. In fact I got pretty emotional just watching him get emotional. I need to see it again to be able to be more specific on how that includes the crew. He seemed pretty angry at that alien for luring them there.

I don't think it would have negated any progress in Kirk's maturity if he wanted payback for the deaths in his crew and the total destruction of his ship. Enlightened Prime timeline Kirk kicked Kruge off a cliff in Trek 3 and angrily killed Col. Green in The Savage Curtain. At the same time, as much as he wanted to kill the Earps in Spectre of the Gun, he didn't. But he wanted to. I would have liked to see Kirk in this movie at least fight with those emotions until he actually decided that his crew comes first and
the saving of Yorktown is actually the real objective
.

However, this was really a very minor point to me.
