Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

Since these commercials seem legit, I'm pretty sure this is the first time Star Trek movie commercials have aired this early before the release. So much for lack of advertising. Usually commercials appear about a month before, then increase in frequency to fever pitch the week of release.

I kind of wish they hadn't given away the destruction of the ship in the previews.

Same here. They did the same with TSFS, too. Hopefully that means there's something else they're holding back until release day.

If we get red nacelle caps, I'll be happy.

I actually like the reasoning for Kirk being bummed about his birthday in Beyond more than in TWOK, where he was just sad that he was getting old. This Kirk's reason is because the date of his birth is also the date of his dad's death, on top of the fact that he's now the same age or older than his dad was when he died. That's a much more compelling story than, "Aww man, I'm getting old and need glasses."

And even if he was bummed about getting old on his birthday anyway, it isn't exactly an original idea. James T. Kirk wouldn't be the first person to be sad about getting old.

I remember on the commentary for ST3, Harve Bennett wasn't happy about Paramount doing that.

I remember the comics when Kirk and crew had the Excelsior. Nancy Bryce and Konom the Klingon and all that. Some of it was pretty good and some of it wasn't. What was shitty was later on, when they destroyed Spock's ship the USS Surak and killed the whole crew except him just to get him back in place to tie in with the next movie without leaving any loose ends.

The trailer that I originally saw for TSFS did not show the destruction of the Enterprise. That was a hell of a shock on the big screen in the theater.

Comparing original and new timelines, is the Franklin sort of paralleling Kruge's bird of prey, just as something to get the crew from point A to point B ?

I remember those comics as well. I particularly liked the Mirror Universe arc. As with everything, they definitely had ups and downs. And they could indeed have found a better way to revert things to the status quo for Star Trek IV, but they were also under severe time pressure as I recall.

Hadn't thought about the Franklin as the Bird of Prey, but I doubt the situations are quite the same. Particularly since the crew probably isn't going to be court-martialed when they get back. Point A to Point B though....possibly.

Maybe they're given the NuExcelsior in this universe instead of a new Enterprise, that would be fun.

^ I loved that one. It was the ad in comic books at the time.

And of course it was the Mike Minor version of the ship, looking so much closer to the original.

Actually considering the poster above was replicated for one of the main ones for STXI maybe they will use the new TMP 'rainbow' homage as one of the main one sheets in theatres (not just a fan thing). Insurrection also did it with VI - used the 'floated head' VI teaserposter as the main movie poster (even down to the similar tagline)

Yeah, I have a Richie Rich comic book from then and the whole back cover reproduces that poster. In later months, closer to the debut of the film, comic books had back covers completely reproducing the rainbow poster.

Yeah, but they soon took the stinger out of the Borg. I'm thinking of an alien power so strong it makes the Borg seem impotent.

The trailer does interest me to the point where I want to know more!

Star Trek has almost always "declawed" their antagonists, from the Klingons, to the Feringi (sp) , to the Borg. They all started out as ferocious enemies, but eventually became officers and crew members.

Probably around the time they re-re-designed the ship.
