Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

I'm sure people are already preparing to scream about how Beyond opening up with Kirk being less than happy about his birthday is ripping off TWOK again.
Probably.
I like it. I was kind of stunned and pleased to see it. It ties the two Kirks together. Both are concerned and a bit self-conscious deep inside about age and aging. Also, a son passing the age when his dad died, especially when his dad died young and under the circumstances of George Kirk, would lead to some self-reflection on that birthday. To me, one of the strengths of "Star Trek" is that has allowed time to pass and characters to age.

I love all the "reveal" shots of the Enterprise in both films, though my favorite is right before it goes to warp to Vulcan and the emerging from the atmosphere of Titan. Interior design questions aside, I really enjoy the look of Abrams Enterprise.
I love those shots as well though mine ranks with the Titan scene as my favorite and then the second was when the Enterprise went after Spock and the Narada and shot down all the incoming torpedos at Spock. That scene was just awesome in the theater. Gave me goose bumps.

I think this is the final scene.

Agreed. My mom asked if Sulu was going to die when she saw his escape pod grabbed. And I was like I hope not! And I looked at the leaked picture of this same shot on the wider angle and didn't see Sulu, just Chekov and Uhura. They better not wack him off. I know he survives the landing on the planet and escapes later on the Franklin, but he's missing from that end shot.

Maybe he ends up with the Franklin?

Maybe they're given the NuExcelsior in this universe instead of a new Enterprise, that would be fun.
Was going to say, that'd be cool. Wasn't that going to be the intention of The Voyage Home initially? I know that in the comics of the time, that actually happened between TSFS and TVH.

It was, they were meant to be shuttled over to her. That's why we get the tease of them flying over her saucer section initally.

For some reason they did an ass-pull and give them the Enterprise-A.

I actually like the reasoning for Kirk being bummed about his birthday in Beyond more than in TWOK, where he was just sad that he was getting old. This Kirk's reason is because the date of his birth is also the date of his dad's death, on top of the fact that he's now the same age or older than his dad was when he died. That's a much more compelling story than, "Aww man, I'm getting old and need glasses."

I agree with you. This has more depth to it, in that not only is Kirk's birthday the anniversary of his father's death, but from what we see in this new trailer, Kirk has been trying to live up to a man he's never known nor met and hasn't really become himself as far as a Starfleet officer.

With Pike gone and Marcus being a traitor, there really is no one to tell Kirk that he would have done his father proud, always wondering if he has.

I've always wondered if he could take any comfort knowing from Spock Prime that in the other universe, his dad did live to "proudly" see him become captain of the Enterprise, so he could at least assume the same in his realty's dad. Or if that makes being deprived of it personally in his reality even harder.

In a similar vein, I had a brother who was my inspiration to love music, even put me on a path to playing a guitar and eventually becoming a tribute artist (to the point of having that artist's widow call me and compliment me on my performance). Even though he knew of that happening, he passed away before I had some more success with it, expanding a bit more than what he saw.

I never will know how he would feel seeing me progress more with what he inspired me to do. You want to talk about hard? There isn't a day I don't think of what he'd say or how I'd just want him back for one more day to hear what he had to say about it.

Because birthday ennui isn't something normally attributed to middle-aged white men.

Nimoy made that call. It was in script to get Excelsior but he felt it wasn't right to change ships.

I felt same. Never liked the Excelsior class. Constitution much sharper

the opening score been bugging me what it sounds like - Interstellar? (like the warp fx)

Music in trailers is seldom the music from the film. As many have pointed out, trailers are made by companies independent of the studios. The music is selected by the trailer editor.

Middle age starts at 30 in the 23rd century?

I just saw this, it looks pretty great.
This trailer was definitely the "fan" trailer, while the first one was the "general audience" trailer.
It looks like the Yorktown starbase badge design from trailer #1 is the actual design of the station, so that's neat.
RIP Enterprise.
