Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

If you're using Firefox, it may be that. I had to switch away from Firefox because the latest build caused my Youtube and Vimeo videos to stutter and skip. I moved over to Chrome, where they play flawlessly.

How have you gotten around the random-shutdown glitch? Or have you not ran into that yet?

I haven't had that issue.

I occasionally get the shut down or stutter glitch for YouTube on Firefox....but I maintain Firefox because it has add ons that allow you do download YouTube (and other) videos.

I love Firefox, except for it's slower-than-molasses speed, and it's inability to play video without jerking and stuttering. I remember when Firefox was pure awesome. For me, it isn't anymore. It's not like I love Chrome, it's a decent browser, but it lacks some of the features I love about Firefox. What I need is the speed and video ability of Chrome, with the stability and versatility of Firefox.

I tried Pale Moon, and used it for a long time, thinking I found the answer, but now I'm finding it can't render secure pages very well without screwing it up. I've lost transactions, can't access some bill pay websites, and I don't know why. I let the people at Pale Moon know, but I doubt they'll get to it any time soon. In the meantime, I have to go elsewhere.

Opera's a fast and lightweight browser, but it's a pain in the ass with the limitations it has on users modifying it (passwords, bookmarks, extensions, home pages, all work differently in Opera). The new Edge browser kicks a lot of ass, but it has a poor Bookmarking system, and no ability for add-ons.

So where do you go? The major browsers hold the market, and they're all flawed, some oddly so. No wonder people have multiple browsers, it's so they can do everything they need to do. Too bad there isn't one browser that does it all.

Are there any add-ons that could help me with my YouTube playback problem? Today I came upon an embedded video (a trailer for the Vixen web series) that wouldn't even play in Firefox, and when I tried to open Chrome, it froze up my computer for a couple of minutes and I had to End Process in Task Manager to stop it, then reopen Chrome and wait for it to decide to start actually loading the page, and then the video played only a few seconds at a time and eventually the picture lagged behind the audio, and I just got frustrated and gave up. And Chrome doesn't seem to like Netflix/Silverlight at all, playing it at lower resolution and less smoothly than Firefox does. So Chrome does not seem to be a good alternative for playing video.

No, I mean Chrome's shutdown glitch. It literally shuts itself off randomly, often within just a few minutes of opening.

I think I've got Firefox working. The video is still choppy and rough, but performance has increased. I tweaked a whole bunch of settings under the hood, and I'm getting Chrome speed. Hopefully I can get this video thing resolved.

Oh, and on topic, I'm loving the excursion uniforms. They look rugged, like they're meant to handle adverse conditions. One thing that always annoyed me about TOS (and TNG, as well as DS9 and VOY) was this need to beam down to different planets without any kind of actual protection. Yeah, established planets are one thing, but unknown planets? Even a sensor scan can't catch everything.

Video playback seems to be (from what I've read so far) becoming a nightmare no matter what your browser. VP seems to be caught up in the bigger brou-ha-ha over software inter-compatibility. Microshaft has been causing havok in the software world for years by not allowing it's source code to be open to all developers to make sure their third-party software is fully compatible.

Hi, Christopher,

I can say that Internet Explorer has (so far) been playing embedded YouTube videos without any problems.

On the matter of how to improve performance of YouTube (and other video sites) on Firefox....right now, I haven't a clue. I haven't researched add-ons for that matter yet.

In the Firefox add on search, I usually type in searches for YouTube download capabilities. Also, usually typing in playback searches result in about the same lists.

And I don't use Chrome, so now I really couldn't say.

I'm sorry that I could not be much help in this matter.

What I would recommend is to get a Download Helper add on for Firefox, and see if the video will download for you onto your HDD, then play it back with whatever media players you have. Be careful.... some download add ons might be a bit..... hinkey. Best recommendations: Download Helper (which now doesn't seem to be available), and YouTube Video and Audio Downloader. If they start affecting your overall performance on Firefox, just uninstall them.

I try to avoid using Internet Explorer. I thought they discontinued that browser anyway.

I don't use I.E. if I can help it. (but it's the only way I can see embedded videos on this site).

Can't say I ever heard that the browser was going to be discontinued though. Hmmmm....

They did. Microsoft now has the Edge browser, which is superior in every way to IE, and will be even better once they allow for add-ons.

Can the Mods split this thread so that it once again focuses on the new movie? Either that, or rename it "STAR TREK BROWSER"?

Meanwhile, I wouldn't use a "download helper" add-on in Firefox. Every time I've tried one it made Firefox lock up so bad I had to reboot the computer.
