Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

I'm thinking the comic was written afterwards to explain it. I don't think the writers on the movie really cared.
Since when did writers have anything to do with casting decisions? From what I've heard, they basically wrote that part with Benecio Del Torro in mind but Benedict Calculon's over-acting was just too hypnotic to pass up.

I think Del Torro became unavailable, and then they just picked the best available after him, going from the Blu-Ray extras.

It was the right choice - talented, highly marketable and reportedly good to work with.

The Khan thing would have attracted a backlash regardless of who played him.

... The fact the movie was not quite as explicit as the episodes in giving us an "info dump" moment of dialogue, stating the obvious, should be held in its favour, not criticized. I rather enjoy it when filmmakers (TV writers, novelists, etc.) presume I'm intelligent enough to work out something plausible rather than presuming I lack such skills and need to be spoon-fed. There are elements of the "reveal" that could have been more smoothly handled (the pause after "My name is Khan!" was overdone, for example, but that's a rather minor quibble). But omitting a five minute sidebar to address his altered appearance is not among the film's storytelling weaknesses. It is a strength.

This. I hate it when genre shows or movies get into geeky over-explanation of every little unnecessary detail that contributes nothing to the plot. Just get on with the story, already!

Precisely so. From my quick read, del Toro became unavailable due to scheduling conflicts. Cumberbatch was recognized as a well known talent, and very marketable, as discussed above and cast some thing like two weeks .

Cumberbatch was not their first choice by a long shot, but that first choice had moved on. You work with what you got.

If anyone owns the set what's the bluray like with the 3 ship models?

I'm getting one as an early birthday present and the set has the movie and not sure how many disks but also in the box are a model of the Enterprise, The Franklin, and a swarm ship.

So just wondered for anyone that does have the set what are the models like?

They are comparable to the Micro Machine's ships as far as what they are made out of (that's assuming you ever had them.) Not diecast, so if you are removing the ships from the plastic casing be careful because the nacelles can bend. They are adequate for their size and the detail is pretty decent. They do come with small black stands.

Aren't they a little bigger in size than the Micro Machine's ships?

I have kept mine in the plastic holder, I feel scared to take them out in case I break them. I kept the box packaging too.

The Franklin model feels kind of bendy and that's what scared me so I'm leaving them in the packaging for now. I posted pics in another thread.

Very nice! Love seeing concept art like that. I think the mining camp actually looks better with loads more of the alien "things" in it as seen in this art.
