Bones will be Bones!

No, expectations were pretty high:
"According to early tracking, Paramount and Skydance Productions’ sequel to 2009’s “Star Trek,” opening three weeks from Friday on May 17, is gearing up for a stellar $85 million opening, which would mark a record debut for the sci-fi franchise. Analysts suggest the 3D actioner could exceed $90 million, depending on word of mouth."

I think STB will do about 50M-60M opening weekend and under 200M total domestically.

Holy wall of text, Batman! That Spock/Uhura bit in the clip is the only thing from promotion so far that created an emotional response in me and some anticipation. If they want to make me root for them, I already do.Some people, though, are finding Bones' part inappropriate because it looks like he is happy Spock is being dumped by his woman rather than being concerned for his friends. As if he's vindicated because he is divorced and single and everything is right in the world if the vulcan dude loses his woman too. To be honest, the more I watch the video the more I can agree or at least wonder if perhaps that was the intention to not make him exactly likeable but hopefully make it better by the end. Them turning Bones into a bully xenophobe with Spock is the one tos thing I really don't need to see them pay homage to in the reboot. Please no. Especially not with THIS Spock. I hope their whole dynamic isn't all like that (but honestly their 'been there done that' banter is less interesting to me than what happens between S/U, Spock's arc and the other dynamics like Kirk/Chekov, Scotty with the alien girl and Uhura/Sulu at the base) Besides, I'm starting to get annoyed at the hypocrisy of some fans who harpy on Uhura and call her naggy with Spock (or soap opera. Really? because clearly the dudebro scenes are the finest points of writing and absolutely necessary for the advancement of the main plot?) in the same breath they praise Mccoy and Kirk's behavior with Spock as 'funny' or character development. Like really. It seems like to some people only the woman is supposed to 'understand Spock is a vulcan' while the dudes can be as disprectful as they want in the name of comic relief..and it's ridiculous because she would be, if anything, the only one truly entlitled to have certain arguments with him since they do have a relationship (but she doesn't, anyway. She argued with him ONCE because he seemed to have a death wish. She never called him a robot, pointy or preached about her being better than him because she's human and he doesn't get stuff)
The tracking seems in line with this summer, box office seems down across the board for the traditional movies. I do think it's gonna open at 60-70m like the other ones though.
Can you provide me with a link to the clip where all this subtext is happening? I went back several pages through the thread but couldn't find it.

Last year was an amazing summer so many great films it felt like I was always at the movies or every other week. This year is lacking and I think after last year interest in going to the theatre for the films in theatres in summer is down. The quality is not there feels like blockbuster season 20 years ago.... Better stuff on tv and Netflix.
Thanks!
I think your right it's definitely going to open on the low side no matter what Paramount says about STID it was a huge misstep for the rebooted franchise. In terms of development it took way to much time. Amongst fandom the second half of the movie is largely derided for what it did. And all the rehashed stuff from 2009. This has largely become the narrative about how people feel about the project and Beyond is coming out 3 years after STID once again a damn long time in terms of running a successful movie franchise. If the films good it could have legs and make money over multiple weeks, but with this film's marketing and everything else going on its an uphill battle.

I thought it was a bit high-schoolish more than gruff, but yeah, still typical of McCoy, who always seems to enjoy it when he can get to Spock. Thanks!
Yeah, not seeing any xenophobia there. Just Bones' typical gruff but friendly ribbing of Spock.
I disagree. STID was one of the most successful and highly rated Star Trek films so there should be no reason why Beyond can't build on the success of STID and 09. I dislike Rihanna's song but it alone should nail the marketing.
It was critically and with the mass audience fast forward 3 years though and the primary narrative in the media is how much Trekkies disliked it and how J.J and company said they made a mistake however it was received then that's not the narrative the media supports.
For the money spent on STID it underperformed compared to expectations of the studio not majorly but it was not the success they hoped for after Star Trek 09. I am hoping beyond will be even better than 09 and have long legs like the Mission Impossible films.
I think 3 years is about the limit these days for sequels two years seems to be the sweet spot. It depends on Marketing campaigns and Beyond's has not been very good.
I think the marketing has really got its sh*t together these past couple of months. They're pushing all the right buttons with the retro-style posters, trailers and TV spots.
On a different point, I'm warming big time to the concept that triggers the events of the movie: at what point does a programme of peaceful expansion and exploration become objectionable to some external species or space-faring civilisation? I always had the similar question when watching Trek on TV except I wondered what would happen if the Federation encountered a similar organisation from beyond the galaxy. Would they cooperate? Would one try to integrate the other?
For example the first trailer with Sabotage got a lot of bad buzz.
Watching the video, I don't think Bones is at all hostile in his intentions. He just doesn't take the break-up seriously. Maybe he thinks it is inevitable they will get back together?
Agreed. Bones is not being xenophobic.
He is treating Spock as a mate or buddy.
What'ja do? is the right question to ask.
Yes, even with a smirk or a bit of a smile.
Connotations of was it something Spock did or said that caused it the breakup.
They do. Good friends do anyway.
Thus, I'm entirely comfortable with the exchange between Bones and Spock.
IMHO, people reading xenophobia, bullying etc into the short conversation are over analysing.
