Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

I wonder if Gabe Koerner is getting compensated for the use of his art?
Is that his? There might be another version of his work I'm not familier with, but outwith the usual/standard lines the details look completely different.

Edit: Seeing that pic, ok maybe :p

As Devon mentioned above, that is Gabe Koerner's version of the Enterprise. It's years old.

Can't help but wonder if the company just used Google and went with whatever they felt like.

Well, it is a BETTER design.

That Spock/Uhura bit in the clip is the only thing from promotion so far that created an emotional response in me and some anticipation. If they want to make me root for them, I already do.Some people, though, are finding Bones' part inappropriate because it looks like he is happy Spock is being dumped by his woman rather than being concerned for his friends. As if he's vindicated because he is divorced and single and everything is right in the world if the vulcan dude loses his woman too. To be honest, the more I watch the video the more I can agree or at least wonder if perhaps that was the intention to not make him exactly likeable but hopefully make it better by the end. Them turning Bones into a bully xenophobe with Spock is the one tos thing I really don't need to see them pay homage to in the reboot. Please no. Especially not with THIS Spock. I hope their whole dynamic isn't all like that (but honestly their 'been there done that' banter is less interesting to me than what happens between S/U, Spock's arc and the other dynamics like Kirk/Chekov, Scotty with the alien girl and Uhura/Sulu at the base) Besides, I'm starting to get annoyed at the hypocrisy of some fans who harpy on Uhura and call her naggy with Spock (or soap opera. Really? because clearly the dudebro scenes are the finest points of writing and absolutely necessary for the advancement of the main plot?) in the same breath they praise Mccoy and Kirk's behavior with Spock as 'funny' or character development. Like really. It seems like to some people only the woman is supposed to 'understand Spock is a vulcan' while the dudes can be as disprectful as they want in the name of comic relief..and it's ridiculous because she would be, if anything, the only one truly entlitled to have certain arguments with him since they do have a relationship (but she doesn't, anyway. She argued with him ONCE because he seemed to have a death wish. She never called him a robot, pointy or preached about her being better than him because she's human and he doesn't get stuff)
This post is everything wrong with the internet.

But I think STID has started with low expectations, too.
No, expectations were pretty high:
"According to early tracking, Paramount and Skydance Productions’ sequel to 2009’s “Star Trek,” opening three weeks from Friday on May 17, is gearing up for a stellar $85 million opening, which would mark a record debut for the sci-fi franchise. Analysts suggest the 3D actioner could exceed $90 million, depending on word of mouth."

I think STB will do about 50M-60M opening weekend and under 200M total domestically.

Wow its actually real (thought it was an axajoke)

I had an idea it might be someone's Photoshoppery gag, but it's apparently a legit tie-in product.

Whether it's available anywhere outside Malaysia, however, isn't specified.

If his permission wasn't obtained in advance, (and these days, who knows?) I can only hope that a word from a business agent to someone at Paramount will eventually result in Gabe seeing a few shekels (ringgit?) earned from the promotion.

Since it's the Enterprise, doesn't Paramount still own all rights to it?

Gabe can't claim ownership of the basic design, no, but it seems that if an artist's work is used in the packaging of a licensed tie-in product, the artist ought to be due a consideration for having performed the work, even if it wasn't commissioned for that purpose. That's just good business practice.

Which may describe many companies, but not Paramount. :)

I just wondered if artistic license applies to the work if it's as tightly controlled as something like the Enterprise design. Obviously Paramount asserts their rights pretty strongly.

Watching the video, I don't think Bones is at all hostile in his intentions. He just doesn't take the break-up seriously. Maybe he thinks it is inevitable they will get back together?

This will be the first time

I seem to remember them arguing in ITD when Spock sacrificed himself on that planet (in the volcano) and she was pissed he didn't seem to care what that would do to her. (and of course Kirk said something similar. They kind of double teamed him)

All couples argue, but it wasn't a break-up so if they do this will be the first time.

And I don't really see that as double teaming him since Kirk said 'No, don't drag me into this,' but then admitted 'She is right.'

Agreed. Bones is not being xenophobic.

He is treating Spock as a mate or buddy.

What'ja do? is the right question to ask.

Yes, even with a smirk or a bit of a smile.

Connotations of was it something Spock did or said that caused it the breakup.

It happens a lot - not with Paramount/Trek, but in general. Most times it's settled with a simple email from the original artist with an invoice attached. Hopefully he notices and can get a few pennies for the happy accident.
