Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

Yes, this makes it sound like he's in the cold opening, which may or may not involve the crashing ship... but probably sets up Elba's villain status.

A couple of sites say the scene was already filmed in Vancouver. (Maybe that's also been said in the un-translated link above, if so, my apologies.)

Here's a link to one of the sites reporting it's already been filmed:

Well, I assumed it was already filmed -- they wrapped shooting a week ago. It's a bit odd that it never came out until now (not that it's that big a deal).

But they can still have pick-ups, additional audio recording (ADR) and other units filming prior to the final edit is done.

Probably a "walk on" and not a significant part.

^ I think the first article linked by ralph called it a cameo appearance.
article said:
And' the fiftieth anniversary of the TV series Star Trek (The year 1966) and is also the day of the release of the movie Star Trek Beyond, sequel to Star Trek Into Dark, which finished shooting from very short. Ladies and gentlemen, Ancelotti is right in the cast of this mega production.

Not a role in all respects, mind you. A cameo rather. But five stars. In one of the opening scenes, among scientists committed to study an alien, there would be just Carletto. More precisely, plays one of the doctors of the ship. But how on earth he was able to pull off this coup, to be engaging? Well, part of the shoot as a location in Vancouver, the city of his wife Mariann. He also is a friend of the famous American actress Zoe Saldana: she would propose to the prestigious small part ... That is the beginning of a brilliant career in the movie business?

Yeah, it's principal photography which has wrapped. The main cast is basically done in front of the cameras, but second-unit shooting could still happen if required, and stuff like ADR can be going on until quite late in the post-production process.

I know IMDB isn't exactly a trusted source, but I just saw that Eric Banerd is listed as "Swarm soldier (uncredited)"

Could the baddies be called the Swarm? (and before anyone says, I doubt it's the return of the baddies from the Voyager episode of the same name!)

IMDB actually had accurate descriptions for minor role in the past. Probably agents who want to improve their clients' resume. So this can be true.

"Swarm soldier". This sounds interesting if true.

Naw man, naw.

It's gonna be a direct sequel to that episode. Theaters will have two options: they can either run the VOY episode in full as a lead-in to the film, upping the runtime considerably, or they can air a five-minute clipshow montage of what happened. Either way, it catches all those filthy casuals up-to-speed.

The name "Swarm" (not exactly this specie) could be a tribute to Voyager. Why not?

But their tactical system is interesting. "The ships were shuttle-sized, with a weakness being their connectivity with other Swarm vessels. If a feedback pulse was fired at Swarm vessels, other nearby vessels would also be damaged".

I'm just tired of seeing Ship-to-Ship Combat.

Because "swarm" is an incredibly common and generic word that Voyager has no exclusive claim on. It's the name of a Marvel supervillain, a Transformer, a race from the Starcraft video game, the title of a couple of other video games, a Minnesota lacrosse team, an app, a remote weapon system, a 1978 killer-bee disaster movie, and several science fiction novels, including a Star Wars novel. Not to mention, you know, bees and wasps and locusts and stuff in general. As well as any large group of things that can be perceived analogously to a swarm of bees or locusts, making it a commonplace and natural label for any vast enemy horde (e.g. "The soldiers swarmed over the battlements"). You might as well assume that if the movie uses the word "home," it's referencing the Enterprise episode.

There's also the fact the Swarm in Voyager was in the Delta Quadrant, on the wrong side of the galaxy to be in a TOS-era movie (never mind what the tie-in comics did). And there's the fact that it was totally lame. Although the subplot in the episode of the Doctor's memory loss was compelling, the nominal A plot concerning the Swarm itself was tedious and forgettable. I can't imagine anyone being all that interested in revisiting them, especially in a story set in a different century on the opposite side of the galaxy.

I agree. It is a unimportant VOY episode

Well, if it is true, why Swarm?

Swarm means: An aggregation of persons or animals, especially when moving in mass.
Would it be a new specie that it could be in connection? Like Borg?
It is a guess, only.

"Swarm" is also a tactic some bookstores use to close in on suspected shoplifters (vague Seinfeld reference). :)
