Star Trek Beyond teaser re-scored

I decided to channel my initial skepticism towards something more constructive. Nothing against The Beastie Boys but I did my best at taking out their music (except at the beginning) and replacing it with something a little more, uh, traditional. :)

Hope ya like it!

It's a good effort, but the appeal is essentially nostalgic and doesn't actually track the imagery any better than "Sabotage." What about trying out some traditional orchestral score other than Horner? If Maurice is around, he's come up with some really interesting choices for temp scoring of a small movie we've been working on together for, like, forever.

Actually, you know I wonder if the themes to Galaxy Quest or Stargate would match the action; neither is any more overly familiar than Horner's TSFS.

I could've spent weeks coming up with the perfect music. I didn't necessarily want to punctuate each specific action beat, though (like every other movie trailer). I played around with some Star Trek V but in the end I really wanted to pay tribute to Horner.

Stargate would totally work, especially the track "Mastadge Drag" which has been used in a lot of trailers and TV spots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke9aa67RI24

You have to admit the bar for any Star Trek trailer was set incredibly high by the second full length trailer that came out in Spring 2009 for the first of the JJ Treks. That music was absolutely epic and sold to you that you were in for a great movie. I was wondering what a rescore with that would be like?

I stated this yesterday but I believe that it's not so much the imagery in the trailer but maybe how the trailer is presented that some have an issue with. In fact, the YouTube page's top comments are really complaints along the lines of the music being used and how the trailer was made to look like Guardians of the Galaxy (which, I'll admit, I have absolutely no idea what "Guardians of the Galaxy" is like, so it's a little lost on me.) While I personally have no problem with the trailer I can see why it might be rubbing some the wrong way. I truly believe when the first full length trailer comes out, if it follows what we saw for ST and STID's trailers then it might calm some nerves.

I like it. But then I was fine with the use of music in the official trailer anyway. My only criticism is that the mixing for the tag could some tweaking after Kirk's line. It sounds like an edit, instead of what it should sound like, the orchestra restarting. And maybe instead of End Titles, the end title score from Giacchino might work better.

Thanks. Like I said, I did the best I could with what I had. It was just an afternoon project and it was difficult enough finding just the right three seconds for the end.

And I certainly have nothing against The Beastie Boys - it was just an exercise in giving things a different vibe. On one hand, it fits in with this version of Kirk and what's been established earlier. On the other hand, you don't want to come across as "another generic sci-fi action film" either, and I fear that's what Paramount is doing (to some extent).

True.

OTOH, it doesn't hurt them at all if they come across as "another Justin Lin movie."

Needs to be different music that isn't so heavily identifiable with Star Trek. Much of the time I was just thinking about Kirk stealing the Enterprise.

I watched it expecting a nostalgic fan project.

But you know what? It really works!

All those action scenes need an underscore of class and nobility. That music was perfect without changing a single scene.

Thanks!!

How about some of Giacchino's music from ST09 or ST:ID?

Kor

Maybe next time. I really wanted to feature one of the original scores in this one, if only to see how it might play in a modern setting.

I agree. The movement in the piece where Kirk jumps his cycle punctuates that part perfectly.

Yeah, I was expecting just a nostalgic nod too, but this really did turn out good.

Although I still like the teaser trailer as originally presented, the Horner music does work the trailer equally well. :)
