I discovered Beyond only a few weeks ago--it was one of the things that prompted me to finally throw in the towel and make that darned list--and found, much to my amazement, that it's one of the longest filmed Trek series on the Internet, second in length only to Hidden Frontier.

Plus, it's pretty good stuff. Love the theme song.

Haven't watched any yet. When exactly is this series supposed to take place in the ST timeline?

STB takes place 150 years after ST-NEMESIS in 2529, and (13) years after a 50 year battle called "The Bahn War" [against a Crystaline Race] which almost annihilated the Alpha Quadrant, and almost put all of the lives of the remaining sectors into extinction. [Most of this history is written under an online fan-fiction series called "Star Trek-Elite" which is posted under Deviantart.com and can be accessed through the STB website]

The remaining races of the Alpha, Delta & Gamma Quadrants were forced to relocate into a new sector of space called the "Kilos Quadrant" where they have forged an "Alliance" to restructure & consolidate not only their forces, but their way of thinking to progress in life.

The Alliance military is headed by General Rodar [a Romulan Tal-Shiar General] and who is completely against a senate [or council] that still governs the Alliance through separated orders of races; i.e. Klingons govern Klingons, Federation govern Federation, etc. The commission of the Romulan General is the first move by the Alliance to unite the races under one flag.

The Alliance has made new [and powerful] allies with new races encounted in the Kilos Quadrant. The first is the Mariner-Consorituum whose "Battle Lord Mentality" have made them the powerhouse in the quadrant, and the second is the Jade-Kussar, a nomadic tribe of Jypsy-pirate entrepeneurs that control the other half of the Quadrant through mapped trade routes and trading stations.

STB tells the story of the Alliance Space Vessel (ASV) PRECIPICE on it's 2nd year of a 4 year journey to map and explore the farthest reaches of the Kilos Quradrant which is set by the Alliance to be colonized within 15 years.

I watched Episode 2 this morning - this is maintaining quality. I like that pirate chick and the Captain - they seem fun, but the Captain really reminds me visually and accent wise of the girl who played Mary Cherry in Popular (which ISN'T a bad thing, honestly!) and the CMO amuses me because he seems quite wooden at times - especially when he comes onto the Bridge, pauses for a minute and then goes 'Oh my god!" with virtually zero emotion.

The studio has made it official that the 4th Season to the series will begin posting online on August 8th!

The cast & crew are set to begin production for season 4 episodes next week and the production staff is already working on a new opening sequence since there has been a minor change in the cast.

The studio is very interactive with the fans and there is a Q&A page posted for comments and/or requests from viewers; all of which are answered by the director/producer.

Viewers should also keep in mind that most of the episodes are under 16 minutes in production and are posted through MySpace for easy viewing.

That'll give me enough time to get caught up in the week that I'm at home before the new series starts. A season a day, I think.

YAY!

Random annoying question time I'm afraid - is there any way of downloading the episodes? I'm guessing there's always going to be an issue with bandwidth and server load, but I'm probably one of the few people left on the planet who doesn't have the net at home :scream:.

[My mother always told me I WANT never gets, so I'm fully prepared for the answer to be "no" :p]

YES. You can download each episode through the Google & MySpace host site. There is a link on each video and David Q has made sure that the videos can be downloaded from the net.

On a better note, the studio will be releasing series set DVDs with each season and behind-the-scenes videos, pics and blooper reels. They look really nice and details for getting them will be released next month. The DVDs have clearer video and sound!

YAY :D I probably would've noticed that if I took the time to read everything properly... Part of the problem with abusing the internet in company time ;)

Thanks! looking forward to starting Beyond this weekend

Funny thing...that is the sole reason David Q started production on STB in 12 to 15 minute jaunts! He wanted people that watch internet videos at work to have the time to watch STB without getting into trouble for watching videos an hour at a time.

Kind of revolutionary if you think about it!

I'm very new to fan productions. Until playing a role in one (as LCDR Fraoc) I didn't even know they existed. I've seen one or two besides STB. What do trek fans think makes a good fan production? And, I'd like to know how STB stands in that respect.

All I can sy about a DVD collection is, that if you charge for it then you are playing with fire.

Paramount has been very diligent about keeping us informed about the rules regarding these things.

thank you dmonix for your concern. I hope you like the show.

Whoa whoa whoa... You've been in touch with Paramout?

That sort of intel is really quite valuable. Other than the fairly well-known "four-point plan" that Phase II worked out with Paramount (no profit, no film festivals or conventions, no donations, no official sanction), the fan film community doesn't really know what Paramount will and will not tolerate. If you could share with us what you've learned, I think more people than just me will be grateful.

As for fan films, I'm in it for the same reason I was into Trek: good stories that stimulate my brain cells. The closer a film or series can get to "I, Borg" or "The Inner Light" or "A Taste of Armageddon" or any of dozens of other episodes, the happier I am. I haven't seen enough of Beyond to make a call on that yet. I know my own Excelsior has a long way to go.

- We were contacted shortly after the series became successful at gaining a large fanbase that talked about us at Star Trek.com. After that we received emails and (2) letters with guidelines about what "we could" and "could not do" with the series.

The first BIG noticable thing they stated was the "no profit" and "no official sanction" clauses. However, what separates STB from other fan films is that the creators developed a series that has it's own universe and delivery which was noted by Paramount as an "impressive vision."

There are no loopholes other than that, and fans can be offered the oppurtunity to receive DVD/CD Roms of the series at the cost of postage; so long as there is no charge for the manufacture, advertisement, or profit from the DVD packages.

I'm not sure if you have seen the "Directors Commentary" video we released a few weeks back, but the director, David Q, made mention about how at COMIC CONS, artists sell Star Trek related illustrations, ceramic busts, and completed model works for hundreds of dollars without any penalties by Paramount. A lawyer was consulted and stated that any works sold under the practice of "good taste" without the copyrighted "Star Trek" logo cannot be considered as copyright infringement.

But Paramounts control over Star Trek is seemingly ludicrus, as even using the Vulcan sign in a Hollywood movie is considered "illegal" and any producer would have to pay for it's use in their films.

Weird stuff.

I find it rather odd that what you have been told runs completely counter to the guidelines given to Phase 2. It's not just the Star Trek logo that is owned by CBS, it is every aspect of that piece of fiction, it doesn't matter if you're not using the "Star Trek logo".
