Star Trek audiobooks

I listened to The Entropy Effect with George Takei (with Leonard Nimoy as Spock).

I enjoyed it, especially when listening to Nimoy.

Do you guys like Takei’s narration?

Yes! He was the big surprise, since James Doohan was the Trek actor known for voice work. Takei's "Strangers from the Sky" is a triumph! Especially his Southern belle Melody Sawyer.

I think he was nominated for an award for one of his S&S Audioworks?

The sad thing about "The Entropy Effect" audio is the Sulu's own subplot is completely abridged out of the final production.

Is there a list of the audiobooks released by Pocket? I was curious how many of these were read by Nimoy, Takei, Doohan, etc.

I have a pretty good idea of which books but I was also hoping to find a comprehensive list.

In Entropy Effect and Spock’s World (which I’ve never read), I think Takei does a great job, but I particularly enjoy Nimoy as Spock’s narration.

They feel like nuggets of “Lost Performances” of Nimoy as Spock.

There’s also the Captain Sulu Adventures audiobooks like “Cacophony” (by Peter David under the pseudonym J.J Malloy), “Transformations” and “Envoy”. There were no print editions of these books, and all 3 were read by George Takei.

Although Peter David was originally promoted as the author of "Cacophony" in pre-publicity, I believe PAD has since denied he wrote the script.

The unique "3-D" effects work better with the CD versions of these "Captain Sulu" audios (and headphones) than the cassette tapes.

Therin, that’s an AWESOME list.

constructive criticism: if you want to add an “a, b,c” separating the titles.

Anyway, thanks for that! You’re the man.

What about the digital version?

No idea. I bought the first one when it first came out, on cassette to match all my others. The second one I could only find on CD and the 3-D effect was amazing. I replaced my first cassette and made sure I got the third one on CD. Not sure if the cassettes were unable to handle the "3-D sound", or if it was my player at the time.

Yeah, I was always reluctant to number them because so many of the novels used to be numbers. How about some asterisks? Done!

I’m not sure why that would be since we are talking about regular stereo CD’s (and any digital versions would be sourced from the masters made for the CD’s) not 5.1 or anything (and none of my CD’s mention Dolby Surround encoding, so I don’t think the 3-D was done in surround). The cassettes were most likely recorded with Dolby “B” noise reduction, so maybe that was interfering with the 3-D part somewhat.

Whatever the trick was, the "3-D sound" on the CDs was certainly immersive - coming from every direction - when wearing headphones. The cassettes played like normal stereo.

I tried listening to Cacophony with headphones (on tape) and it was just too jarring for someone like me with a sensitive startle reflex. I preferred something less immersive.

It startled me lots, too. Certainly the author made great use of the 3-D effect with that script. Avoid the CD!
